Hi,

I'm fairly new to AK Here. I keep seeing references to "white van" speakers. What exactly is a white van speaker and how did they become known as such?

For some reason, it seems that the vehicle of choice,to hustle cheap speakers and home theater units out of the back of ,is the infamous "white van". They approach you with a "great deal"....:nono:....a great deal for them that is.

My 25-ish cousin told me last weekend that he'd been approached by white van salesman a few times recently. He didn't understand that it was a long and widespread tradition and thought he just had unusual "luck" when it came to people trying to sell him what he assumed were stolen speakers.

"Hey! Are you interested in buying some great speakers at a great price? I'm an electronics installer. I just finished a custom installation in someones home theater. My boss gave me one pair of speakers too many. He didn't realize he did and I aint tellin' him. These are $3000 high end speakers. The Aural XTC- PB4U-69's. Check out the paperwork :deal:. I'm willing to sell them to you for $600." The trick is the speakers aint high end, aint worth $3000, and nobody familiar with high end equipment has ever heard of them. Worth closer to $100.

I guess I could have googled it but I didn't think it was such a widespread phenomenon. We don't see that kind of thing around here as far as I know.

They even have slick websites promoting the speakers which supposedly reinforce/justify the $1999 price sticker on the speaker box.
It must be true if it's on the internet....

Happened to me around 1998 in a record store parking lot. As i was leaving and stuck at a red light a white van stopped next to me and the guy yelled out the window if I wanted to buy some speakers. I said no thanks and never looked back.

About 3 years later my friend experienced the white van while at the bank. The dude showed him some bullsh$t spec sheet and advertisement. Unfortunately my friend bit and shelled out 400 bucks. As soon as he told me what he got I asked if the dudes were in a white van. He said, "yeah how did you know?" I cringed as I explained that he was just duped.

Amazingly he had just bought a set of PSB Image 4T's a couple months earlier so i have no idea why he even considered buying more speakers.

white van speaker guyz didn't get me, but the white van video camera guyz did. this was back in the mid 80s before every one and his brother/sister owned one. paid $150 cash in a parking lot, only to find a buncha newspaper and a couple bricks when i got it home, despite what appeared to be the original box. the joke was one me, so to speak...

.... and it's not alocal phenomenon, it's a worldwide business. I had my first visual contact 1987 in Berlin/Germany!

Come to think of it I remember an old detective/cop tv show (Don't remember which one) where a guy bought a TV off a shipping dock from another guy who convinced him it was an expensive new set. It was a large box with a small cut-out where the buyer could see part of the picture tube. When thje buyer got it home it was just a picture tube and a bunch of bricks. I didn't think that kind of thing went on anymore. Seems to me it was Dragnet or 1-Adam 12 (Yes I am OLD!)

I've had the white van fellas swoop in on me a couple times. Never fell for it.
Last time I saw them at a gas station while I was pumping gas, they were trying to sell to some gal. I went over and told her not to do it. They got a little rude so I got rude back at them. She didn't know about the dupe-boyz in the van.

During my one (and only ever) approach by the dudes, I simply invited them over to my house and we could compare them to my LaScalas.... if they sounded better I'd buy them...if not...

Imagine my puzzlement when they declined

It worked back then, and it still works today, often enough to keep them in 'business', because people are still people.
