Some Empire Turntable History

So, as part of my back burner 698 service/restoration, I've noticed the particle board plinth is starting to swell just a bit at the bottom.
It has kind of always bothered me that the particle board in no way matches the quality of the teak and glass top, so I've considered building a plinth to match the top, from teak.

Will this hurt the value?
Not that I'm likely to ever sell it.

Don't know about resale value, but over 30 years ago I had a custom wood base replica made for a 598III I own because of the same issue and it still looks stunning. 3/4" plywood with a real wood veneer, stained and finished with gloss polyurethane. It really upped the look and "aura" of the unit. Also much heftier which is always a good thing.

Beautiful work @basplin !

Can you share the info for the border-less sticker?

The stickers come sandwiched between a layer of wax paper on the bottom and a plastic layer on the top. Take off the bottom wax paper, stick it all down, rub the letters well, and peel off the top plastic. No heat required! It seems like a pretty strong bond, we'll see how it stands the test of time. PM me if you need one, I have extras...

Very interesting.

My dust cover is EC, and I have decent woodworking skills.

Interesting that's available, though.

that's why i suggested contacting the seller; i'd be surprised if he wouldn't just sell you a base, for a bit less cash...

Record store day coming up....haven't used my Empire 698 for a while since my amp has been going through a rebuild. Almost finished though! And looking forward to using the Empire again.

What's everyone spinning on their Empire TT's lately?

This thread is buried & hard to get to, doesn't see much action.

Man, I lost the center 45rpm adaptor from my 698. I pulled the platter off, forgot the adaptor just sits over the spindle & it fell off & rolled somewhere. Ugh.

I have one of those plastic doohickeys on it for now, but it looks pretty hokey.

First, I'd go look for it at my favorite bar.

It will eventually pop up!

i just had a 698 shipped to me in knowingly pretty terrible condition. To see what worked, I turned it on and the platter was scraping the surface. I pulled the sub platter off and saw there was nothing in the shaft. Rolling around in the shipping box was what I assume the plastic thrust plate. I couldn’t find a clamp or plug that goes in the bottom of the shaft.

In what order and far do these items go up in the shaft? Also, can I just find a solid washer that fits snugly in the bottom of the shaft to plug and how far up should it go?

Appreciate everyone’s help! IMG_3440.jpegIMG_3439.jpegIMG_3441.jpeg

There are a number of things going on here. In case you don't know, the knurled nut is the speed fine-tuning adjustment for the motor. That needs to be screwed onto the threaded shaft so the motor sits almost level. It isn't part of the bearing at all.

You are missing two parts. One, a solid metal disc and a c-clip. if looking at the bottom of the bearing shaft (i.e.: the end the platter shaft enters is at the bottom of your view) the order is this: neoprene washer, derlin disc, solid metal disc, c-clip. All three parts should be small enough to fit into the shaft, but big enough to hit the shoulder of the bearing and not fall into the well. The C-clip locks all parts in. In an original 698, the thickness of the o- ring, derlin disc, metal disc, and c-clip are such that when all are installed properly, the c-clip *just* fits into the groove that is in the aluminum bearing housing to form a tight seal fit.

The bearing uses this type of c-clip:

You should be able to get non-Empire OEM parts that will work. My guess is you'll need to replace the parts you have. The derlin disc is probably worn and the other side of it, if it isn't smooth and clean (no scratches) should be replaced. If it's smooth and unblemished, you can just make that side the part the tip of the bearing contacts. The o-ring looks trashed. I'm not sure what the sizes/thicknesses should be though. Maybe someone else can chime in with that. Replacement derlin discs are available on ebay, but I don't know if they are correct in size and thickness.

@reverend13 , this is what my 698 looks like from below.

Thanks! This is extremely helpful to know what I'm looking for since I couldn't find any pics online. I can see where there are scratches inside where the original c-clip may have been. The derlin disk is smooth on the other side, so I can flip it over.

As for the o-ring replacement, solid metal disc and c-clip, I wonder if these are something I can pick up at my local Ace Hardware.
