Southern California AK 2022 / 2023 Meet-up Info & RSVP

@trackball02 mentioned being able to host in Pasadena back in October, but that's also his most recent sign-on to AK.
I can check on hosting, if needed, but I thought it'd be good to allow others the opportunity to do so. We had a couple others offering venues when we planned future meet-ups back in 2020; perhaps some of those are still options, too.

My main audio room can probably accommodate up to eight; it is fairly full of source equipment including multiple turntables and two tape decks. There is room for auditioning different amps. Right now I'm playing Yamaha NS-5000 speakers.
In my den, I can accommodate about 5, and it is mostly vinyl with all tube gear with Zu and Omegas as speakers. There is some space comparing preamps and amps, especially low watt stuff.

Let me know of any suggestions.

We'll have at least a couple pair of open-baffle speakers that take up a good bit of space, in terms of behind and between. Most likely, we'll have both set up, which might be a challenge. I usually go with around 5' behind but can try 3-4'. I know others will likely need some space too.
I don't recall exactly, but do remember it being a between 20 and 30. For some reason, 26 sticks in my mind. This was spread out between a large room with maybe 12-15 people, a smaller room for 8 or so standing, and some demo areas set up outside. This worked well to break things up a bit. Hopefully, weather will improve by the time this takes place; it'd be great to be able to set up some equipment outside. This also might be a challenge due to neighbors, but it could be potentially usable space.

We've got some ideas of equipment we'd like to include, and this will likely grow. I think we should probably decide when we want to have it, as the date will affect attendance and obviously the space needed.

Concept and Overall Operation

The Ultimate Switcher (TUS) allows the user to switch two separate amplifiers between two separate pair of speakers. This can be increased to four amps and four pair of speakers (in pairs) when using the remote amp/speaker attachment. (Alternatively, the remote amp/speaker attachment may be used to distance the amps/speakers from the operations’ area.) Additionally, the user can switch between two line level signals thereby allowing the user to match the volume levels when switching between two systems/speakers/components. Refer to the pictures when reading the text

TUS is divided into two sections (Unit 1 & Unit 2) each with its own set of line level and speaker terminals. The switching process is implemented via wireless remote when Remote is selected for either the Line Ins and/or Speaker Ins. In Grn (default) mode, the signal for each unit passes through the switcher unaltered as to its destination. In Red mode the line level and speaker input terminals from Unit 1 feed the output terminals of Unit 2 and vice versa. Green and red “tell tail” lamps can be switched (Off Lamps On) on to display the mode of the switcher or which piece being switched on/off. These may also be left off for “blind” audience testing, though the console continues to display the mode.

In addition to switching units, the line level connections also allow the user to attenuate the volume of a component. When the Attenuators are in the Off mode, they are by-passed from the system. When turned on and set to <---<, the Grn attenuators are implemented both when not switching (Grn mode) and switching (Red mode) units. When set to <---> the Grn attenuators are implemented when not switching (Grn mode) and the Red attenuators are implemented in the switched position (Red mode).

When Remote is deselected (Internal selected) the Nrml position will allow the Line Ins/Speaker Ins for each unit to pass through the switcher unaltered as to their destination regardless of what the remote selects or tell tails show (console operator override). Similarly, Flip allows the console operator to send the inputs from Unit 1 to Unit 2, and vice versa, regardless of what the remote selected or tell tails show.

Finally the Speakers/16 Ohms switches (also on the sides of the remote amp/speaker attachment) replace the Spkr Out terminals with 16 ohm, 100 watt load resistors. These can be implemented when a second set of speakers is not being tested (e.g., two amps with one set of speakers while applying a load to the second amp), or to override (quiet) as second set of speakers when one is testing two amplifiers through one set of speakers, but two sets are connected. However, if one is testing a tube amp and is unsure that the tube amp can withstand no load for the milliseconds that the relay is open as it takes to fire, a 100 ohm resistor can be attached across the Spkr In terminals. On a 16 ohm load, this would reduce the overall impedance to 13.8 ohms (7.4 ohms for an 8 ohm load) and should have little effect on the sound.

I was getting the hang of the switcher today. It definitely needs a manual for the unaccaquainted.

I also got four 300 ohm, 10 watt, 3%, non-inductive resistors that can be put across tube amps outputs so that there is alway a load on the output transformers, even when the relays are switching. However, the 300 ohms resistance adds almost nothing to a speaker load.

Hi everyone! I wasn’t sure where to post this, so please forgive the double posting. I’m fairly new to the vintage audio hobby and a relatively new AK’er. Wanted to introduce myself. So far I have an NAD 3020 fully restored by the great LeeSonic, a recapped Sansui AU-717, and a recapped Marantz 2220B. Each are great in their own way, and I am officially hooked on vintage gear.

I need advice on a good local shop to restore/recap a Sansui 9090 (non-DB) I recently purchased. Any good recommendations? Anything from LA to Ventura to San Diego works for me.

AB&B in Tustin fixed my three Marantz pieces (two 170DC power amps and an 1180DC integrated). He is a retired Marantz Center Service person who now works out of his garage on vintage equipment.

I might be down if there’s a get together. I’m down in the South Bay.

I’ve got quite a few things I could bring. Some PrimaLuna tube gear, maybe my modded Lenco. There’s a set of Kef R300s too that don’t take up a lot of space and I could bring those.
