It appears we only had one casualty Saturday - the left channel of my Dynaco ST-70. I figured (hoped) it was the cable from the crossover to the Dynaco, but that was wishful thinking. The pre-outs from the handy 1060 integrated and a different RCA cable proved that wasn't the case. I'm more annoyed at having to drag that heavy bitch out of an awkward location and into the garage and having no tunes than I am about having to troubleshoot and repair it! I swapped 7199's and 6CA7's with no change, so who knows what it is. That's going to wait for another day.

My first guess is a burnt resistor if you’ve done the obvious stuff already....

I'll dig into it in the next day or so. Oddly, it was working fine until I moved it. As I recall, I had a dead left channel after recap. I poked around in it and didn't find any issues. I popped the tubes back in, and it's worked for a few months. I guess whatever I didn't really fix has come back to haunt me! I'll check resistors and tube sockets first. Worst case, I'll let a pro take care of it... I just don't like admitting defeat!

Ohhh.... Sounds like it’s just a lose wire or needs a solder touch-up somewhere. Should be easy.

On another note, does anyone have any Accuphase gear? I’d like to hear what all the fuss is about. Supposedly it’s voice to like some McIntosh. They are a bit notorious in that it’s difficult to find schematics for them. There seems to be a ready market for the Japanese 100V versions with people either buying an external transformer or converting them.

I had my Jolida integrated repaired by their local tech (Ventura) recently because of a bad left channel. Fortunately it was just a burnt resistor and not an expensive transformer. The interesting thing is that the Electro Harmonix tubes, EL-34 in this case, failed short and caused collateral damage. He’s seen this often with all brands of tubes from that factory. Now it’s got a matched quad of JJ’s and sounds wonderful.

You guys need to hear a big Yamaha in Pure Direct mode fed by an Oppo 95. The receiver has been used 3-5+ hours a day every day since new (~2003) and has never missed a beat..., nor needed a tube. I've gone though a lot of projector bulbs. And I don't bother to let them warm up before I watch TV.

I don't rag on vinyl. I just don't enjoy the chores of listening to it when CDs are so much easier. What sounds good sounds good and there are plenty of (way too many) CDs that sound like crap.

Maybe a double blind comparison should be in order for a future meetup. I myself have really taken to the sound of my Dynaco pas2 tube pre hooked up to my marantz 170dc. I enjoy the convenience and ease of the SS power and that pre adds just enough of that tube depth to please my ears.

While I do agree that vinyl does require a lot of upkeep I still don’t see myself delving too deep into CD’s anytime soon. I don’t doubt that they can and do sound pretty darned good, it’s just the digital nature of the format that doesn’t give me that warm fuzzy feeling in my ears.:D

I am certainly open to a tube amp(s) coming over for comparison when the switcher is finished. And my speakers are plenty efficient for tube equipment.

It is best to hear something different in an environment and on equipment that you are already familiar with. BTW, the Alps pots and speaker terminal connectors arrived from China today.

Would love to. I'm not exclusive to tubes, it's just another flavor to enjoy. You like sand amps? Me too. You'll like my big Emotiva XPA-1L mono blocks. 250W Class A/B into 8 ohms and they double down at 500W into 4 ohms. The best part is I can flip a switch and run them in Class A for the first 35 watts with no audible switch to A/B above that.

Kind of makes one want to stay with solid state.
@toddalin never passes up an opportunity to rag on tube gear or vinyl records:dunno:

Haha solid state wouldn’t have made a difference here. I felt around the back, and the terminals were all secured. When I pulled ie off the shelf, I was then able to see the issue.

Hey, better that than having to get under the hood David....
Exactly. I'd be annoyed about this, but why would I be upset by not having to work on it? ;) As it is, I'm just glad it's back to normal. Oddly enough, my setup seems to sound better than before I disassembled it all last weekend. I think my speakers are positioned slightly differently, which may be the reason. As it is, I was really impressed listening to it last night.

That's about as good as it gets David! Especially when you find it early on. Maybe we should have a spade crimping workshop too ;)
LOL seriously! I used the crappy crimpers on this cable initially. I used the good ones last night, and I don't think this connector can come off without ripping the wire.

Synergy and small changes can sometimes make all the difference. So back in my main system the new Bifrost 4490 is smooth as silk. None of the harshness we were getting Saturday. Just to make sure I ran it continually for two days using David Grisman's Hot Dawg CD on repeat to electron polish away any remaining nano-flaws in the PCB traces. Schiit uses zero point to point wiring to keep costs in down BTW. If visible that would be sort of like Scrubbing Bubbles meets Ms. Pac-Man. I'm not sure I ascribe much credence to the breaking-in of passive circuit paths, but why take chances?

Good crimps are often over-looked, but key to the connection. My pair of Thomas & Bett's crimpers go back 40 years to when I was doing petrochemical automation and instrumentation. When you terminate a few thousand #14 control wires scattered all over a pipeline pump station you don't want to have to go looking for bad ones.
