I would like to build a pair of speaker stands for my old sansui spx9000. Question is height of the stands. Thinking between 12 and 18 inches. Advice on this???

First, sit down....

In your listening chair that is. Measure the distance from the floor to your ears (a helper helps.) Call this "X"

Measure the height of the tweeter from the base of the speaker. Call this "Y"

Call the top of stand off floor "H"

Solving for H,

H = X - Y

Get a lower chair.

theoretically cutting a hole in the floor and placing the chair on something below would be more dramatic.maybe make it on a lift that goes up and down so when you go to listen you hit a button and the chair sinks into the floor. :scratch2:
