Speaker Stuffing

Hi,
I'm rebuilding a pair of very old Bozak b-305's and I'm having to discard the insulation stuff inside and was wondering what would be a cost efective replacement? Thanks!

Polyfill (like used in pillows) works good and fiberglass (pink panther) is a good choice too. Both are inexpensive and can be glued or stapled in place.

Standard safety precautions when using fiberglass include gloves and a breathing filter. Not required using 'polyfill'.

Just use the poly fiberfill and be done with it.

They have just the stuffing, and they have "batting", which fluffs to appx 1" thick. Two or three layers is good on the sides. I hit it with a staple gun in each corner, and one in the middle.

My recent MOA: When a pair of 'Dacron' filled bed pillows get matted down and smelly, I take 'em to the laundromat. If their seams hold during the wash, I dry them and put them back on the bed. If a seam goes, I safety pin them closed, dry them, and add them to my speaker-stuffing supply.

My 302s had a sheet of Kimsul hanging in the middle of the encloure as well as on the sides (I'm trying to remember if the back was padded also). But if your Bozaks had a similar arrangement, it might be worth trying to replicate it -- probably helpful for damping out standing waves.

Go to a thrift store and buy old wool sweaters. You will not find a better stuffing!

Good point. I have a pair of 302's as well and thay do have a hanging peice in the middle. The 305's have, top. bottom, sides and a "V" shaped peice from corner to center to corner with the speakers in the middle.

What I'd advise you to do is weigh the original stuffing pulled from the enclosure and replace it with a matched weight of new stuffing. If it had acoustical fibreglass in there to begin with, replace with same.
