Stoner Rock playlist

A couple of years ago (or maybe 10 lol) I was into this album: "Fu Manchu - The Action is Go"

I didn't know they were considered Stoner Rock. I thought Stoner Rock had really slow tempos like what Sleep does.

Edit: ya I dont' get it. I also used to like this song but to me it sounded like Mudhoney, not some metal sub-genre

For someone who doesn't get it, you have great taste in Fu Manchu songs.

Looks like the gist of this thread went off track a bit ... "Panama Red", Reggae, et al.

I'll pop in some more STONER material today, probably content w/ a decidedly NORSE / VIKING slant.

Agreed, I think a little clarification is in order on exactly what Stoner is.

From my understanding "Stoner" was born when some record label guy used the term to describe the music of Kyuss. He said Kyuss music was music that stoners like or something to that effect. The term kinda stuck for some reason.

First off, Stoner rock doesn't necessarily have to be about getting high. If it is about getting high and flying through space while high then you get bonus points :).

What I feel a lot of Stoner music has is a slower tempo than a lot of metal, but with the heaviness that metal has. It is an extension of proto metal, punk, and blues based rock. To me the music must have a cool groove and the groove repeats almost like a drone that works its way into your head.

In some cases the repeated, heavy drone puts me in a state that is not unlike being stoned. If I had to compare it to something it might be like meditation where "Om" is repeated over and over ("Om" just happens to be the name of a band that Al Cisneros is in, coincidence?)

All this is not to say that all Stoner music is like that. The absolute banger of an album posted above (Buffalo-Volcanic Rock) has some serious energy. Orange Goblin-Time Traveling Blues is another more uptempo Stoner masterpiece.

So while a lot of Stoner music is newer, simply because the genre is newer, that doesn't mean that music from the 70's can't be included. @Mystic mentioned Leaf Hound, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Buffalo. These type of bands absolutely influenced all of the Stoner bands that are around today and time and time again newer bands have paid tribute to the past masters. One only needs to look at how many times Black Sabbath has been covered to see that the 70's music is at the core of Stoner.

So with that said I absolutely will be including past classics in this thread mixed with newer music. The genre is pretty wide, but let's not get carried away. I think first and foremost the music should be heavy, not necessarily fast, but heavy. You dig? :beatnik:

Well put. Stoner rock is an actual genre with bands that define it. Getting stoned while rocking out or grooving is to be admired, but it's a different thing. How's this for literal?:

Such a killer record! I need an OG copy so bad

If you're referring to the Buffalo album Volcanic Rock, we were trading EX played examples for ~ $300 a decade ago.

If you're referring to Leaf Hound ... well, similar condition copies of the Leaf Hound album Growers Of Mushrooms were going for $4,000 (or more) a decade ago ... sheesh, can't guess where that one's priced in 2022, but maybe a lot more than $5,000 ...? And if perchance you stumble onto SIS ... oy ... get ready to trade one of yer motorcycles.

I claim ignorance with my suggestions. I didn't know there was a genre as stoner rock outside of music about getting or being stoned on MJ or drugs in general. Today I have learned something and offer apologies for my very misplaced suggestions.

Oh no man, I hope I didn't come off as harsh. No apologies necessary.

It is not a well known genre and I wouldn't expect most people to know what it's all about. My post was intended to be educational to anyone who may not know what it's all about.
