Stupid 5w SET Amp

Redboy, I listened to the SET/SEP amp last night at Mel's. Not only did it sound wonderful, but the build quality and attention to detail was excellent. I haven't asked BSUjeep yet, but I hope to try them on my system with Model 19's. I've got some Bugle Boy 7189's to try in them! :thmbsp:

Hey sparks, welcome to AK! I'm glad you liked the amp. I bet it would sound great with those 7189s in it!

What's Mel running for speakers? And is the amp still wearing that butt-ugly wooden skirt? :D

Hey there Nate, I was running Dolly on an old set of RSL's through My Dynaco PAS 3 that sparksaflyin just finished modding for me, it sounded great, I am going to try it on my Heresys before she leaves, I just finished gluing up a new base for her this evening, a little finish sanding and some lacquer and she'll be ready to party!

Damn Mel, that's nice work!

We've got to find a nicer knob for that thing... think you could whittle one up out of fancy wood, or something? :scratch2:

i just read and enjoyed the hell out of this entire thread!
in fact, having listened recently to a bottlehead set, and my new el84 amp, i feel inspired to build a simple el84 based SET.
ive never built an amp before, could someone point me to a simple schematic?
ive been trying to learn as much as possible about electronics lately, and i think this would be a good project, the rca 6v6 rebuild i started is a bit over my head.

Once I heard SET, I never looked back. I started with the 300B, because I figured I had to have at least 8 watts per channel. Then I upgraded to Welborne Moondogs 2A3 amps at 3.5 watts per channel. After that I could not resist the 45 Tube. So I am now on my second 45 amp The Welborne Starchiefs. With a massive 1.8 watts per channel into my Khorn/Altec 104db speakers. My wife is still telling me to 'Turn it down':D

The 45 SET amp tube is something special. I own a lot of other amplifier topologies, but they don't have that special 'Magic' that the SET amp brings. Especially the 45 SET.

I own others, but not for serious listening.

Nice Pieces, any schematics ?

sparksaflyin,

I think we can have a lot of fun with Dolly II when she arrives. You can teach me all the thrills of tube rolling.:D I think Dolly I is going home this weekend. Until then I would say have fun, that was what cableguy said to do when he left her off.

Dam.....thank you Mel, that looks great.:thmbsp: You are as advertised...
This has been one of the more entertaining and informative threads in a very long time. Nate all props to you and your excellent work my friend...Thank you everyone who contributed...It is also really cool to see that we are establishing an Idaho AK group of substance....sparksaflyin, welcome aboard and I look forward to meeting you soon.
It's late fella's...ya'll take care.

This thread & hearing your amp are getting me motivated to play with a pair of Roberts / Akai 6BQ5 amps that have been collecting dust!

Cableguy, I look forward to ho'in some taters next time you're out this way.

:lmao:

No worries there, Mel - this one is "tree-free!"

Hmmm . . . sexy . . . you know, in a utilitarian sort of way. I'm thinkin it won't be tree free for long if Mel has anything to do with it. Maybe a matching box for the passive pre as well!
