Just an update to this thread I started nearly two months ago. I got ambushed, well bushwhacked really by Cableguy with Dolly the first of the little SE amps Redboy built and has been talked about much in this thread.
Dolly II has now made its way to my humble abode and is resting comfortably atop my stereo stand making beautiful music.
I have now OFFICIALLY joined the tube owners club, just wish this one sounded as good as . . . oh wait . . . it does.

Fun to see the little tube amps get some love. I've rescued a bunch of these over the years... including a rebuild of one of these Olsons with EZ81 & 6BQ5... Monarch with similar tubes, better iron... Calrad... Zenith... I built a parafeed WE417A amp once... Now I have 845 amps, and never have to worry about running out of steam, but still have a fondness for the little amps.
Bob Danielak's Darling amp is still a winner in the low-power class. I built a tiny pair of them on these little square chassis... Don't know if Bob remembers the story, but my wife actually came up with the "darling" name that stuck. I mentioned it in email when he was coming up with the design, and it stuck. That was before this stuff got so mainstream.

Damn all of you. I have caught this bug baaadd now and eyeing this thread has caused a full onset!!!
Being an ampeg svt playing guy for years now i know the sickness, but the little heathkit aa-32 started it. Next thing you know i am piling up consoles and cannibalizing them with plans, and collecting pieces for my first build. Today i spotted a little table radio with a pair of raytheon 43's and a pair of raytheon 6c6's, and wondered if they are the humble beginnings of said first build.
So it has come to this!!! I have a solder gun and some solder, an old philips tube scope and manual(which i haven't a clue how to use)in unknown condition from a tv repairman's estate sale, a work table and a bunch of console pieces and amps for parts. I have a skill set, but my electronics knowledge is minimal, but is growing feverishly as i read these threads, and the time has come to take the plunge!!!!
Question #1 is what comes first? The transformer, the tubes, or the chassis?
or do you build around what you have on hand? Is a stereo amp anymore difficult than a mono for a first-timer?
You guys have inspired me beyond my skill level,with all the clean builds you're doing. Tone first,and aesthetics a close second for me.
PLEASE...point me to a simple schematic and parts list, or kit for my first creation? But be gentle.......

You can start with the chicken OR the egg... Personallly I tend to gather transformers first, especially when it comes to stereo. More specifically I find a pair of output tranformers, then figure out a schematic/tubes, then locate a power transformer, then last something to put it on. I think that says I'm a scavenging cheapskate with a lot of tubes and transformers (I try not to buy anything).
I think most people start with a schematic. I think Danielak's Darling is a great first stereo build because the tubes are cheap, the B+ is low, the parts count is very low, and the design is pretty solid, with a very good linear driver for a good but not so linear triode. Any old console output transformers can be used. It's small, which makes it a lot easier to build.
