sunday morning organ salvage comin down...

According to other online discussions, the Baldwin 40 had a 12" Magnavox speaker.

Are those tone generators with all the 6SN7s? If so, those cans might contain tuned RC components. I'm much more familiar with Hammonds. Very few tubes in those, other than the amps themselves.

Jack

yes they are.

what are tuned RC components? im not very familiar at all with these organs. had asmall hammond chord organ a long time ago.

Some tube organs are a treasure trove of tubes and parts others you just gotta save like a Hammond M3 i got for a dollar at an auction . One junk one I picked up had 33 RCA black plate 12AX7's and 33 RCA black plate 12AU7's

Beefy OPT's and those smokey coke bottle tubes look promising

yea! seems like pretty heavy iron there. was thinkin the same thing. im sure better suited as guitar amp (someone on youtube with plexi flone outta baldwin amps), but id like to mod as mono blocks, give it a shot. i may be gettin a second derelict model 40 this weekend.

theres another big ass TF for the tone board

Or so I thought; I pulled about the same # of RCA black plate 12AX7's and Amperex 12AU7'S from an organ at a junk store. All of them tested low, and the few I tried in circuit were noisy.

ah, crap! well, this one was pulled form a church dumpster...which doesnt bode well for the pile pf 6NS7s its got.

depends on how much it got used. If it was turned on and left on until it died, they are probably done. If it was on when in use and off otherwise, less likely they are worn out.

That's really a shame, especially the Amperex. I got lucky. If I remember right, I think three of the 12AX7s and a couple of the 12AU7s were duds and most of the rest tested near new or as new. I found mine at an antique mall for 60 bucks. It really was a POS of a organ. I was stunned when I opened the back and saw all those tubes. I asked if they had any tools I could borrow because I was going to tear it apart. Took the speakers and amps and of course the tubes. They said they didn't care what I did with it after I paid for it. So all the goodies went in the car and the rest went in the dumpster.

I've put to pasture, several tube organs at this point. Probably close to dozen.
My favorite are the conn and Baldwin organs filled with 9 pin triodes... another great thing you can find inside organs is field coil drivers.
I think the magnavox 232 field coil drivers can sound pretty good, better than a comparable alnico or ceramic magnet...

Which type organ was that? Most older Hammonds use a tonewheel rather than oscillators. They don't have row on row of tubes.

I think the black round cans may be signal transformers. I parted one of these Baldwins years ago and seem to remember them as transformers. Just a hunch at this point.

ok. i get that. hmn. got an acquaintence with a tube tester. not sure when i get around to messing with this. if that other organ is still available, especially ifits a model 40, pickin that one up is my next move.

hm, wonder if they could be useful for LOMC step-up transformers, or antique radio interstage trafos.

They were two different organs. The M3 is a tone wheel and I believe that it used 6L6's as outputs if I remember correctly. It was a nice sounding organ that my mom wound up with.

radioactive IDd the driver in the pics i posted as magnavox. u reckon its a 232? sure looks like it.

i cant wait to dig in a lil more this weekend. tho...i may be doin a lil road trip to grab another

Its permmagnevox you want fieldmagnevox.

The ones I was referring to have coils of wire instead of permanent alnico magnets in the motor assembly they require a separate power supply or for the feild or you'll barely get sound out of them.
Alnico is good, but it loses magnetism over the years. Feild coils get remagnetized every time you put current through them, so your motor never suffers age fatigue...
My personal opinion is that they are some really excellent drivers...
The alnico version should be alot of the same good stuff, but without the need for a separate power supply...

Not that it's important, but the M3 uses 6V6 outputs, same as the M100 in my living room. :) Lucky for you guys that Hammond patented the tone wheel. Otherwise, everyone would have used it, and all those Baldwins and others would have had almost no tubes.
