I'm not sure what happens when I upload, but the original is much brighter than below.

What is the source of your upload? Is it possible you are saving it as Adobe RGB instead of sRGB? Some programs will interpret an imbedded Adobe RGB profile properly and some (like Internet Explorer) will not.
