Sunset

Funky sunset after a storm tonight. Just a sliver on the horizon, but a blast of color.

I put a zoom on the camera for the sun, but don't like the edit and need to go over it again.

This one isn't focused very well, and I'm kicking myself for that, but it's a pretty good representation. I shot RAW + JPEG, and use the JPEG as a gauge for the colors as they're usually pretty close to what I'm seeing. Sometimes blue hues aren't quite good in the jpegs.

I think I need to look into upgrading the firmware in some of my lenses. Some of the corrections, as I understand it, should be handled in camera during the shots. I was looking at some of the shots and see pin cushion distortion. Although now that I look at it, some of those shots are with an old Zeiss 24-70 lens and there is no upgrading that thing, or at least it doesn't have a USB connection to do it.

The odd color sunsets have continued over the last several days. I used a Kase reverse graduated ND 0.9 filter on these shots. Haven't used it previously. Overall, I'm not convinced it really adds much to sunset images. I generally don't work on the ground details in post as they're not particularly relevant to the image. If anything they're not as dark as they would be otherwise. I can see it being useful for managing the sky imagery in daytime shots perhaps.

There's a light cloud cover and I can see the sun in the sky as it progresses toward sunset in a little over an hour. It might provide some good shots.

This one is from Tuesday.

And the rest are from yesterday.

Focus is a little off on this one, but it turned out ok.

That's the former Oscar Mayer plant off to the right in the photo below. There was a storm passing slightly east, and that cloud formation was the leading edge. There was an odd magenta hue in the sky.

This is one I shot last week that I mentioned I wanted to rework in post because it just wasn't quite what I wanted. I tried to match the color profile of the jpeg and this one is now very close to it.

I missed a good opportunity last night on the sunset. I should have waited another 15 or so minutes after the sun was down because there was a relatively high, thin cloud cover which tends to reflect the light after the sun has sunk below the horizon, and it did. Looked spectacular. I had something I needed to do, so I missed it. There will be more.

Shot this last night. The sunset itself was rather pedestrian. I got a few images of it, but I knew there was going to be some color at dusk after the sun was down.

I shot this with a Tamron 17-50 f/4 lens @ 17mm. I knew I was going to need a tripod and wireless trigger as the exposure was going to be long. Lens correction didn't quite balance out the distortion, so I had to mangle it into something better.

That's Venus on the lower left hand corner of the sky.
