Talk about needing a hobby...

I've had my beard for over 30 years now, yep Sandy it is white and grey now, my wife has only seen me once with it shaved off, a bet, my kids 16, and 20 have never seen me without.

Go for it fotno.

Just make sure to shave your neck so you don't look like The Wolfman -- it scares the kids! On the other hand, that may be a good thing!

After doing the "ZZ Top thing" in college, I've had a close-cropped beard since 1982. It's "salt and pepper" (not gray and white) and chicks dig it! Actually, my wife digs it, and boy was she pissed when I shaved it off between the ZZ Top phase and the more refined look I currently feature.

Grow it, wear it with pride, but don't scare the kids!

Every time I think about lettin' 'er grow out, I can't help but remember this damn teacher at McCallie, when a bunch of us decided to wear moustaches 'n' beards- He was VERY prissy, got right up in the face of the biggest boy, a varsity defensive lineman, & giggled & went,"I see that you are trying to cultivate on your upper lip that which grows quite freely in the crack of my ass...Tee-Hee-Hee !" The moustaches were all gone the next day....

I grew mine out a couple times for about two months leading up to Halloween, just to make a more realistic (wolfman-esque) appearance. Wife didn't care for the scratchiness, and I didn't think it enhanced my appearance, so I always shaved it off and otherwise have been clean-shaven my whole life. My Dad grew a beard after retirement, though, and looks great in it, so maybe I'll do that eventually. :scratch2: I think he still has more hair on top than I do, though, so maybe it won't look so good on me. (shrug...)

Good Lord, my hair started turning white at 18! Now what's left on the sides is mostly salt with a little pepper; the top's like a billiard ball. But whenever my whiskers grow past the two-day stage, I can't wait to shave it off because the heat held in by the whiskers drives me insane.

I figure at this stage in my life, there's nobody left that I care all that much about impressing or dissapointing, except Mrs. Fotno and my Mama, and they both gave up worrying over my craziness years ago... Mrs. Fotno always tells people, don't laugh or point, you'll just encourage him!

If kids aren't scared of me already (I AM bigger than some houses) the beard won't make a difference.

Like I say, I've always wanted to go all ZZ-Top and grow it out, and after almost 30 years of shaving (starting at age 13), I feel I have licked all the red off that particular piece of candy. It's kinda like washing dishes, once you've done it once or twice... You've absorbed about everything that washing dishes has to offer.

I DO get tired of pullin' the "stragglers" out w/tweezers-an' you NEVER get all of 'em, anyway, & the "inbreds" that get sore as hell, fester up & make a Sucking Chest Wound on yr neck...

I would not mind a beard, but I'm stuck with the moustache. Two years back I slipped on the black ice in our driveway and smashed my two front teeth through my upper lip. Seventeen stitches later just call me scarface. How that pretty little nurse got in all those stiches through my moustache I'll never know.

Had to see a dental surgeon and our dentist still shakes his head, he was sure I was going to need root canals on both teeth.

Rob

Rob, that story hurts even me way up here.

I'm pretty much a clean shaven lad. Tried the moustache but after 2 weeks all I had was what appeared to be a vast desert wasteland with a few scrub trees here and there :lmao: Besides, that nice clean shave helps keep me warm at night.

I wear a reverse-goatee. No idea what it's called, really. I just made it up.

I've let it get REALLY long on the sides sometimes, like some kind of Southern General, but Mrs. Wiggy gets a tad displaced about it.

That's one of the reasons I started growing the goatee Rob - I had a car wreck, stupid driver (me), wet road, when I was 19 and ate the steering wheel. Always wear your seatbelt children! It shoved my upper teeth clean through my lower lip, and took 9 + 3 stitches to close the two different cuts up. Tore me up but good! Left a nice scar too...

Ok, perhaps it is the fact that I can't grow a nice looking beard (wayyy too blonde-headed, leaves my would-be beard translucent), but I actually like to shave. Put on my music, lather up with shaving soap (williams is ok, but I prefer Burma shave...getting hard to find) and emerging with one hell of an exfoliation....

still, I keep the dang round beard(Van Gogh, whatever it is called) I've got less chin than Ron Silver, so gotta do it for asthetics.

I never shave on my off days, only the days I work. Long weekends and vacations can get pretty scruffy.

Fotno already pretty much scares the kids, that would be a non-issue here. :naughty:

Rob, I am RARELY EVER without a mustache - when I was a little tyke, I fell on an old metal floor furnace grate, and split my upper lip all the way in two up to my nose. Thank heaven I was small enough I don't remember it. The centerline of my mustache starts just right of center on the bottom and angles up to the left, following the ridge of scar tissue. I usually clip out a little triangle at the bottom to make it appear "right" to the casual observer. (It is my only concession to vanity!)

Those would be mutton chops, Wiggy. :D Technically "extravagant, with mustache" if you join the two together.
