Tape Eraser

MRL_Audio

RIP 2022
Dumb question?:no: Perhaps. Will a demag unit also bulk erase a tape? Specifically thinking about a Akai-AH9 demagnitizer and reel to reel tapes. Also, if this is a no go any reco's on a good eraser for 7-10 inch tapes? Thanks.

Though this comes up often it seems.

In your case if it is a wand type of erasure used to demagnitize heads, it will not be good for demag tapes.

I wanted to demag 7 inch rtr tapes so I was out on the hunt for one. Bulk errasures are I think what you are looking for. You can buy new for a lot of money or you can try and find one off ebay. This is what I did and they work really well.

Thanks. Yes, it's a wand type. Any reco's on a decent one to look out for? I am looking at an Akai ATE-7 just not certain it will fit the bill.

Seems bulk tape erasers are coming out of the woodwork, lots on the bay. I would have jumped all over that Nortronics for 5 bucks, but I already have an AudioLab which works well.

Your choice is hand held or one that is table mounted and allows you to spin the tape on the unit. Since you turn the unit on while in contact with the tape, move over the entire side, flip the tape and repeat then separate the two by 3-4 feet before turning the power off, think about the way it is used and buy the one that you would be more comfortable using.

The Akai will erase a tape but costs twice what it should from a tape accessories reseller. But then all the Akai labeled stuff can be high because of the name so grab that one and off you go.

a dumb question too.
Does a head rod demagnitiser can erase totaly reel to reel tapes
cassette deck tapes ?

Not quite sure what you mean by "head rod". If you mean the wand hand held ones that are used for tape heads, no I don't think that will work. Not enough surface area for a full reel of 7" tape or cassette.

Head demagnetizers will not erase tape. I mean, it might cause a drop-out or something if you held it flat against the tape, but certainly would not do an erase on a reel. You need a "bulk" erasure. And don't try to build one, like I did!!!

Interesting, I built mine and it works fine. I used an old "EI" core choke and just removed the "I" part.

I have told this before on AK, but is still good for laughs.

I saw a DIY bulk erasure in an Electronics, or stereo mag back in the day.
The idea was to take (their recommended) transformer apart, put it back together with all the U shaped plates oriented in the same direction. Tape it all back up....and VOILA...a bulk erasure on the cheap.

I did not have the tranny they recommended..but I had a BIGGER one. Bigger the better, right?

Out in my detached garage, one hot summer day, on my workbench...followed the directions, got all done, took another sip of beer, and plugged that puppy in. Most of the tools nearby on my workbench slammed into the thing...all the lights dimmed way down, and there was a loud, low frequency hum coming from the electrical system. Power cord was melting when I finally got ahold of it, and pulled it out of the recepticle.

Went in, bandaged my hand, got another beer, and sat on my front porch contemplating life while a power truck drove around the neighborhood looking for 'a reported problem'. Asked me if I knew anything about it, and I told him...Nope...been sitting here on my porch all afternoon.
