TDL Electronics Owners Thread

Hi Dan,

I forgot about Axel. I recall he ended up with all the left over stock when TDL went belly up. I'm surprised that he doesn't have the info you require.
 
There are a pair of unidentified, large TDLs on ebay at the moment, in Croyden. Too far away for me to make the trip and the owner doesn't know what model they are - His measurements aren't accurate (He reckons they are 147cm tall by 40 cm wide, which they obviously aren't) and he says he can't take the grills off to take a photo of the drivers.

From the look of them, size-wise, and from the metal surround to the front grill, they're too tall to be Studio3s or RTL4s- Possibly Monitors or early Studio 4s (if he's quite tall, I only have a picture of him standing next to them to judge scale!)

It looks like I've mis-identified my TDLs - they are not Studio 4s after all, but "Studio Monitor m" - (which I hadn't heard of before) so the mid range unit is anodised metal and the crossover point between mid and hf is different to the Monitor and Studio 4 (2k vs 3.5k) - so I may have been wasting my time trying to track down info on the wrong crossovers.

Doh.

I was hoping that Geoff might chip in here! - he seems to know everything worth knowing about these big TDLs.

Hi, Subsonic Dan...

I have never seen a schematic nor driver specs on the “M” series TDL’s. However, from what info there is online, it looks as though the TDL Monitor - non M - shares the same PCB and parts complement as the RSTL. Falcon Acoustics does have an Elac/IMF/TDL datasheet online that may be useful. If you have easy access to the XO’s, refreshing the NP0 electrolytics is a nice rainy day project.

I have found that isolating these speakers’ feet from the floor helps with bass presence and definition. And placing a one by four inch felt strip between the midrange and tweeter eliminates audible interference between the drivers. Ace Hardware p/n 5303136 Surface Savers Heavy Duty Felt Blankets are what I use.

I can upload crossover schematics, if that would help.

Are there TDL part numbers on your drivers? For example GT3021/03, 25DT31, 13NS11?

Not sure if you saw the updates before the auction ended but there are new pictures with the grilles off and a corrected height for the cabinets. They're TDL Reference Monitors and, I must admit, I was tempted!

I have seen the Elac data sheet online, yes it's one of the few sources of info for TDLs that I have seen.

My bass drivers are 3021GT / 01 (same basic driver as the /03 but a slightly different impedance. I have no idea whether these are the original spec drivers for this box. Can't find that info at the moment.

The mids might be the correct 5.5" anodised metal cone units - but there is no part number on them, nor any indication of their manufacturer (I'm assuming Elac) Also, in the couple of bits of publicity info for the "Studio Monitor M" that I have read, and accompanying images, there is quite a pronounced phase plug on these drivers, where mine have a more generic, plastic (?) dome dust cap. Don't know if this is a repair or just how they came.

It goes from bad to worse. I took one of the HF units out today, expecting to find an Elac 25DT of some flavour - but instead I have a 6Ω Vifa unit (D25AG-67-06), which i doubt was the correct, original part, and I'm speculating that this may be why a former owner had to abandon the original crossovers.

I did come across one very old forum post from a former TDL employee - who had been responsible for some cabinet making etc. He said that when he left the company he took with him all the parts he needed to make himself a pair of Studio 4s, and it wouldn't surprise me if a similar story lies behind these. It would explain a few things!

Just a clarification, the speakers in that eBay link a few posts above are NOT "Reference Monitors" at all nor are they called that. They are clearly known as TDL "Monitor" which are the 4 way speaker system. The only TDL system that used the word "Reference" was the RSTL (Reference Standard Transmission Line) not to be confused with RTL (Reflex Transmission Line) which was the huge 3 angled face TL with dual Bass drivers, Mid ranges, and tweeters, but only a single Super Tweeter.

I have the original double fold presentation folder for the "Monitor" and also the "RSTL", thus I thought it best to clarify as that link will eventually become defunct and then there'll be some confusion I feel.

You are of course, quite correct. My apologies - I shall go and flagellate myself with my copy of Hi-Fi Choice that contains the original review of the Monitors as penance!

Please don't beat yourself up over it, it's just that the word "Reference" gets used quite a lot and when used in the wrong context like on the TDL thread will create much confusion, especially for people that are new to the brand. I guess it's a bit like the word "Professional" in the IMF range, now there's a situation that IMF themselves created by reusing a word in 3 different sets of speakers, one being at the beginning of the companies existence and one towards its end and believe me that's had plenty of people on here chasing their tails over the years.

This was the only reason why I brought it up, believe me I thought it over many times before hitting the keyboard not wanting to offend.

Could TDL RT2 be, '' somehow '' comparable to IMF... let's say... TLS 50 ? .. I have a line on a pair of RTL2 but, they look '' cheesy ''
 
RTL's are "Reflex Transmission Lines", but not full TL's as we know them. They were a compromise and thus much cheaper to manufacture as that was the direction that the market was going at the time, more budget systems and many manufacturers going to the wall that made quality products.
 
More than one year after the last post, I've just became aware of this thread.
Here I am, TDL Studio 0.5 owner from Italy - bought them in Rome in Decembre 1991 and never had a problem with. I also have the original stands with spikes.
I have been running them with a Unison Research Mood solid state amp and a few days ago I upgraded to a Naim Nait 5i.
I'm starting to notice some cracks are opening in the woofers' suspensions, so I will have to have them repaired in the next future. Probabli a recap is also due.... not sure.
I'm thinking of a future upgrade to a more recent system, but I love them - a lot!

As well as IMF TLS80s I also have a pair of TDL Studio 4s. I bought them in 2004 and they replaced a pair of RTL3s in the downstairs system. I moved them into the upstairs system when I bought the IMFs.

The Mid/Bass driver are definitely not but tweeter maybe
I bought a pair of Studio 1s with no mid/bass drivers and have no way of measuring the thread so i may have to carefully remove the old t nuts and fit new M6 ones unless i can find out what thread the original bolts were
On modern units they are M6 so i am guessing the TDLs would be 1/4" UNF i was just inquiring as to whether anyone knew for sure before i order some bolts and get the wrong size :)
