Very quiet here.

But I have a question: My Studio 3 have the original stands. I wonder if the are needed, speakers are quite big and the extra height by the stands is not spectecular. Furher: Is it wise to use spikes? My speakers are standing on a wooden floor.
 
I wouldn't have thought that spikes aren't necessary as long as the speakers are making good contact with the floor over the whole footprint i.e. not rocking. I don't know the Studio 3s but if they came with stands then they should be used. Are these stands quite low height? Can you post pics?

Spikes are for carpeted floors. Remove them. If they don't come off make board backed carpet pad.

I leave the spikes in on the stands for my Studio 4s. Imo the stands are there to keep some distance between the speaker cabinets and the floor to reduce bass coupling effects. The spikes keep the bottom of the stands off the floor. If you don't like the spikes then fit some hard rubber or nylon feet. I find that with the stands the bass is lighter but less congested and this extends up into the midrange which appears more open to me. It's hard work moving big speakers around but sometimes the results can be worth it.
 
I would not use any pads; particularly soft ones. Speakers are like a sprinter who need to push against their blocks so that they transfer all energy to acceleration. The opposite would be fine dry sand, & most of the energy is dissipated because of the unstable sand particles.

I'd use the stands, assuming there's not a cosmetics issue.

The stands appear to have a front port. Is that correct? Do the speakers sit on the stands or are they fixed in place?
 
Yes, the stand is made of square tubes. They are the original ones. The lower part of the speakers fits IN the stand, so horizontal movement between the stand and the speaker is impossible.
 
The stands are part of the design. They achieve the best positioning of both the woofer and the transmission line exit windows from the floor. My Studio 0.5 sound very well even without stands, but with them you achieve the perfect balance between the lower range and the rest of the spectrum. Also, the soundstage benefits from them...
 
Hi Bruce. What do you need exactly? I have the crossover schematic and I think an old spec sheet but I'm not at home right now. I'll look it up when I get there.

Going to build a couple of stands and hopefully use them with a Sansui Alpha series.

I’m sorry but I cannot find the info I promised. I have a TDL sheet for the Super Compact but is only one paragraph of marketing and a drawing. No specs. If the crossover schematic is of any use to you I can open one of mine up and trace it out.

Had them apart today, crossover is as schetched, bonus new caps in them.
Tested ok so will hook them up tomorrow.

Wish l know the wattage of these.

Hi all, hope someone can offer some advice on a myriad of questions I've got about a rather rash ebay purchase... :)

I've bought a set of spares or repair Studio 3s. One has no drivers or tweeter. The other has a tweeter (labelled 25DT49 and marked 8ohm) and two 8" drivers (ELAC 8DC471). Note that these are the (I think?) newer drivers, with six bolts, rather than the four bolt square surround version.

From the ELACIMFTDL spreadsheet kicking around on the Internet, it appears that Studio 3s should have 16ohm 8" drivers, so I've possibly got the drivers from a newer pair of Studio 2s?

I'm not sure all the wiring is original and I believe the crossovers may have been fiddled with. I've struggled to find other pictures of Studio 3 xovers but these look a fair bit sparser in comparison. I'm no expert (couldn't be farther from it), but from studying the wiring on the pics I could find, I think the tweeter is wired the wrong way around. Also it looks like the woofers are wired in series (positive from xover to speaker 1, negative from speaker 1 to positive of speaker 2, negative to xover) whereas I think the drivers should be wired in parallel?

Both of the woofer cones appear to be in good condition and move freely, but plugged an amp in and only 1 of them appears to make a little bit of noise, and I'm not sure the tweeter is working as it ought to be either.

Would pictures help anyone determine what was going on? And what would be the recommended course of action, assuming I basically have 2 x Studio 3 boxes? Are there reasonable modern equivalent drivers and tweeters that could be dropped in?

Hi all,

So I've done a bit of research following my rash purchase above and the only similar driver I can find is the Monacor SPH-8M (link: https://www.soundservices.co.uk/product/sph-8m/). I'm assuming I'll need four of these, and won't be able to re-use the 2 x 4 ohm ELAC drivers currently in the cabinets?

Any advice on these Monacors? Will they work? The T/S parameters don't look vastly different, but would appreciate any advice! I'm working on assumption that I'd wire these 2 x 8 ohm speakers in parallel for a 4 ohm load?

Also, with regards to tweeters, there's not a great deal of info on the originals, but I only have one of them. I've been looking at the audax 12x9 (link: https://www.falconacoustics.co.uk/audax-hd12x9d25-12x9-tweeter.html) but not sure if these would be suitable?

On top of all this, guessing I'll need to play about with the crossovers to get them working properly with the above speakers.

Any advice or suggestions on the above?

Got my Super Compacts connected for a listen. First time out in a couple of years as I moved and they were stowed away. I still like them a lot. Nice clarity and decent tight bass. Work pretty well with my low powered PP tube amp too. Jusy sharing.
