Technics 1200MK5 slight damage on delivery

have the threads for the aux weight been damaged inside the tonearm? I may have missed that. You only need that weight with some cartridges, and it shouldn't be hard to get another one. Check for play in the arm.

If you replace the arm, there are a number of wiring options -- different wires inside the arm, different ways to run through to the RCAs, different voltage regulators. Read around a little bit. You may find that you don't want to do an exact match. You may find that you can work with what you have if you want to save up for something beyond repairing everything to stock/ original.

Unless you are scratching, I would replace the platter mat.

For the dust cover, many recommend taking it off for listening purposes as it can easily pick up vibrations from the music. There are mods that can be done -- I think there are even Technics pieces -- so that you can use the dust cover to protect everything and have it as a removable piece. It really doesn't look to be in that bad of shape.

If your stylus came through without damage, that is a miracle. I would count on replacing the stylus. Hopefully the cartridge body made it through alright -- that will certainly save you a couple of dollars.

Aux weight/ platter mat/ stylus. None of these will require man hours from a tech. That is my first thought based on pictures, but there could be troubles lurking in the deep.
The threads for the Aux weight werent damaged. The clip with the female threadswas bent out severely. seems like its not to big of a deal..as I have already removed the weight. The dustcover is in decent shape, it doesnt seem to have suffered damage during shipping. The stylus is functional, I have been using it actually. I am indeed in a hurry to change it, as it dug some deep gouges into the platter during shipping, and I understand I should not be using it AT ALL! The stylus did not break however! Cartridge is ok.
I dont think that I am going to change the tone arm, as I think I can live with the damage as it does not seem to be effecting the TT operation.. But beleive me, I would have rather paid the full$479, and received the MK5 in a secured status, than getting the $250 return, and dealing with all this! But I still consider myself fortunate as I do have a BEAUTIFUL TT!

My weekend has just been marred by those pics; what an awful fate for that Technics. :(
Dont lose sleep! It may seem more severe considering I posted the same pics a million times! ( like i said before, I am new to this!)
shes still a Beaut!

I would unscrew the aux weight and see if its threaded stud has bent. If not, then that piece threads into a thin spring steel piece inside the end stub which has bent. That piece can be removed and bent into proper shape, but you will have to remove the arm from the base to do so. It appears the actual end stub was not bent, which is a good sign.

I may have a spare insert from an old arm here if needed, more than willing to mail it to the OP.
Yes it is all intact thank goodness...the stud nut is bent, as well as the end sstub, but I think I can live with it! I appreciate the offer BTW... I will let you know if it is needed. Thanks!

Only an IDIOT would pack a table as badly as that one was and i would ask for a complete refund and leave negative feedback. There is zero excuse for that. There are ways of finding out how to pack a table for safe shipping.................
I decided to keep it! you probably think I am at least as dumb as the seller! And youd be correct, i try to aknowledge my level of stupidity on a regular basis..its good for the skin. the other good thing is, hopefully we will be a little less dumb from here on out! doubt it! I do appreciate extremists in all situations, on all sides. lets us know where the limits currently are, and how to exceed them!

If I was in OP's shoes I would take the refund offer, and buy a new tonearm and bearing (for peace of mind) from KAB, and have enough left over to buy a serviceable soldering iron to DIY the tonearm. The bearing fix is an easy DIY swap out.

The seller is making up for the poor packaging with the refund and should not be further penalized IMO.

To the OP - have you plugged the TT in and confirmed everything works as it should (platter spins true, all controls work and speed is accurate)?
The TT is fully operational, and I have even used it a bit! Everything works. I lucked out considering! I actually made another thread last night asking advice for a new cart/stylus, heh! around $200 of course! actually learned about checking the platter from another poster here, checking against a stionary device. its TRUE as it can get!

I'v given up on some of you AK members who fear being considered judgmental and allow yourselves and encourage others to be dumped on. I'll be more than happy to package a piece of audio equipment any of you nonjudgmental AK members should ever buy from me just like that Ebay seller did. By all appearances the OP is a newbee and I doubt changing tonearms is on his skill level. Since he's keeping this wounded battered bleeped up 1200Mk5 I highly recommend he send it to KAB for a full inspection and estimate of repair. Aside from the obvious exterior damage I'd be suspect of internal damage, possibly cracked boards, due to the box being dropped/thrown from a good height. Maybe he'll be lucky, Kevin is fair/honest, and the cost will be covered by the $250 refund but if you consider shipping both ways you'v already spent about $100.
What is KAB exactly? Im gonna gamble and hope for the best. One day, after I screw myself a few times, I will learn hopefully!!

Yes--see--there you are--let the initial "shock" settle down and see what is really up. You took (what I consider the "responsible" route and let things come into perspective). It is not a matter of "all hope is gone", just sit back and think about it--you came out OK--if you wanted to return it, that was your option, and the seller was (apparently) very co-operative, so "no harm, no foul, no fight". Win-win, so both of you can chalk it up to experience.

Congratulations!!! I think you made the right choice and handled it pretty cool. Asking this forum for advice was the smart move, filtering the responses to your benefit was the smartest.

I own a 1973 SL-1200 since it was new. It's been dropped more than once. I had no doubt yours could sustain the havoc of the shipping, as miserable as the packaging was. As you noticed on your own - it's just minor damage.

Kevin owns KAB-USA which is a TT parts and accessories shop and he specialized in Technics TT's, among the rest. Some people won't believe their own platters are spinning without Kevin saying so, some can actually handle an SL without his assistance.

send it back once fully refunded and buy one from a seller that knows what they are doing.

This is the best advise. Let seller deal with broken parts. You will find new table which is not broken in transit.

Next time make sure seller has original box or knows how to pack fragile items

To me (at least) these posts are "mean spirited" and vindictive. Yes, the seller made a mistake--one that can be recovered from. The seller has already offered more than adequate compensation to repair the damages--with no argument or debate--IMO, an act of "good faith". Not everyone knows how to pack a TT, and this is probably the only one she has ever shipped. The OP is getting the table at a better than fair price (after the refund, even with the damages), so there is no reason to go out on ebay and trash the seller. IMO, an adequate resolution is on the table--there is no reason to "punish" a co-operative seller. Escalating this to a dispute on ebay is a "lose-lose" situation--the only ones that win are ebay, paypal and the shipping companies. As it sits--the seller gives up a sufficient refund, the buyer gets the product they want, and no one else has to be involved, bleeding more money off of the transaction.

Remind me never to sell either of you ANYTHING!!!

+100 !!!

After a loss of many brain cells I have decided to keep it. I f sometime in the near future you guys prove me to be an idiot...Ill let you know!

Seller apparently is an idiot. It does not take much brain effort to predict what is happening with boxes in transit.
I do agree. She took a big gamble and LOST HER arse on this one. She told me she has sold and purchased thousands of transactions on ebay and never had damage of this magnitude. I told her shes had a great shipping to damage ratio and it had to come to an end eventually.

I will have to look into his business, I would certainly rather support an indie than anyone! yea I feel lucky about the whole situation..I can imagine the Ebay post now...

"Technics 1200 MK5 great condition, runs perfectly, no blemishes, dust cover without cracks, original rubber mat, new technics slip mat, numark CC1 included, (could use new stylus)."
was once shipped in less than ideal conditions, where aux weight nut was bent, (can be bent back in place) and back end of tone arm was bent slightly. does not DSCF5832.JPG effect operation. $229 usd..................... who wouldnt jump on it!

Like they said....

Yah can't fix stupid. What makes a person throw away the box a turntable comes in ??

Embryos, I have resisted weighing in until now as you certainly have had lots of advice but also seemed to be capable of making a reasoned decision on your own. I think you made the right one.

If you need help with fixing that sucker up, let us know and we'll be around. :)

Did that Ebay seller successfully ship 1,000s of pillows and teddy bears? Unlikly that the OP bothered to check the sellers items listed/sold to see if she had a history of selling fragile electronics, a whole different ballgame from pillows and teddy bears. Some day we may have a cure for every disease but there will never be a cure for stupidity.
