Technics SL-1900 TT?

I recently bought a 1900 for $20. Absolutely new condition, complete with Empire cart. Like most of these models at this age, auto start doesn't work because it won't drop the arm. If you cue up and start it manually, the arm drops fine, and the auto return and shut off also work as expected. So fully auto is not an option.

Yours apparently has/had the same problem, and you posted some pics, but I'm not seeing the solution. Can you give more detail?

The picture of the cue cam, it was gummed up and not moving at all.
RR clean,and drop of oil took care of the cam. White plastic thing with the spring attached.

I believe it is in the same series as the SL-2000. A budget line, but not bad at all. I have a 2000. It is not quite as good as the SL-D2 I had or the 1700 I kept.

I had a 2000, Black also, but the base was solid wood, Nice TT.

There should be a Thread about it somewhere.

Great job John, you have to be getting pretty good at this by now!

I want to be an expert some day like you guys, where people would flock to my door step with there precious TT's for me to fix. LOL.

Ah maybe after the 1000th TT repair!LOL.

Tackled the SL-1900 auto play problem today, and was successful, thanks largely to this thread.

Somewhat tricky getting it opened up properly, but I worked slowly and carefully. Once I figured the which screws needed to be taken out, removed the top cover. More screws to figure out, and then was able to lift up and lay aside the tonearm assembly. Removed the screw holding on the white cam and found the shaft gummed up so bad it would barely rotate. Once cleaned and greased, reassembled the TT and it worked fine. Very gratifying!

Good Job,:thmbsp: it is a great feeling when it all comes together and you play some music on it! Most of the TTs I fix have this similar problem, its just lack of use.

Hey John. It IS a great feeling! I gotta say that I get more satisfaction out of bringing things back to factory operating condition than just about anything! I'm not shy about opening things up, and have had some good success with a variety of items, including audio gear. Maybe it comes from my farm upbringing, where you have to know how to diagnose and fix a wide range of things, from electrical to mechanical to plumbing to, well, you name it. I remember re-wiring the lighting system on a John Deere 4010 tractor when I was 14 just because I thought that system should work properly. I think dad appreciated it. My brothers are the same way - any of us will even try to fix sealed electrical components if the situation calls for it. Hey, can't hurt to try, right?

Your post inspired me to take this one on, as the SL-1900 was new "internal" territory for me. Knowing it was the white cam narrowed down the analysis. I was concerned that with all the levers, etc built into the top cover, that it would all go back together the same way it came apart!

Thanks to you John, I managed to fix the NM SL-1900 that I got from my cousin's husband.... great feeling isn't it???


Now, if only I could figure out how to get rid of the annoying hum on my Thorens TD124... that one is frustrating to the limit...

Hum is usually from ground connections or the lack of.:scratch2:
