Folgers Country Roast is really surprisingly good if you can find it. I know that sounds strange but it's true. This is my favorite coffee ever.
 
If your takling about store bought, I agree that genaric brands are just as good if not even better than the top name brands.

Now if your talking beans here, I vote for Jamacian Blue Mountain. THE BEST COFFEE EVER! IMHO
 
I like the Whole Foods store brand french roast whole bean coffee. It comes in a bigger than normal bag -- maybe a pound and a half, and it's a decent deal at about $6.00/lb.

The Eight O'Clock brand french roast isn't too bad either.

I tend to like my coffee black, no sugar, and brewed on the strong side. That said, I don't really like Starbucks. And what the heck happened to Dunkin' Donuts' coffee a few years ago? It used to be pretty good, now it is undrinkable (to me, anyway).

Agreed. it has an aftertaste like wood shavings.

I've been into Guatemalan beans as of late. I get the organic ones at Wegmans.

Not suprised, I've been buying Eight O'clock beans for years, though I sometimes find some other brand dark, dark roast and mix them in.
 
So are they (CR) talkin' about a 13 oz "pound" or an actual 16 oz pound, since few if any these days come in a 1 lb bag (can) unless you buy it in bulk?

The one I prefer is Kroger 100% Arabica Columbian Whole Bean coffee, $3.79 for a 12 oz bag ($5.05 a pound). A bargain, and sometimes on sale too. I think it's better than the 8 O'Clock brand but then it probably depends on what you're used to.

I splurged and tried some Jamacian Blue Mountain coffee once, at $30 a pound! Was pretty good, but not that impressive.

You got the wrong idea! You have to be there (in Jamacia). $8 a pound and sooooo good!

Well I buy the 8 oclock beans and grind them. But I just got back from Food Lion and they had the Maxwell House 2 lb blue jugs of 100% Columbo on sale for $4.99. That's less than half price. I got me one.
 
I'm an Eight O'Clock coffee drinker also. Been buying their whole bean coffee for 21 years now. I guess you could say that I'm pretty happy with it.
 
I tend to rotate between fresh Guatemalan and Colombian whole beans, "full city" roast (whatever the heck that means... not dark - not light).

Drip into a thermos (no heating plate).

If I'm buying a commercially packaged coffee, Sam's has a very good Brazilian Bourbon Santos organic whole bean (Marques de Paiva), and Millstone's Colombian (still pretty good, but not as good as it used to be). Both come in the king-sized bag 40 oz. bags.

i tried the walmart arabica several months ago; pretty good. but whenever i've gone back to get some more it's always sold out.

until today. got some more, already ground, tho. that's ok. i've still got some 'price chopper' (a regional supermarket chain) 'central market' whole bean left which is pretty good also.
 
Consumer Reports has 8 oclock coffee listed # 1 over starbucks and
other top brands. It is my favorite but I sometimes grab Maxwell
House or Folgers and can live with either. Imo coffee doesnt have
to be scorched or taste like nutmeg to be good.
 
There is a local company, Arco, and they're by far my favorite. I think they're based out of Duluh.
 
We don't have a Trader Joe's around here so our son ships us Trader Joe's Shade Grown Dark French Roasted from central America 100 % organic and beats anything I can buy at any coffee cafe. It's worth a trip to get it if you have a Trader Joe's around and get the whole bean and use a French Press or machine and mill it your self and forget about the blade grinders.
