DavidK, That's the exact response I received. They must be having many complaints about the original red bag of panther piss.

Yeh well hopefully they keep getting complaints , who knows maybe the supplier to them is giving them crappy beans ............Until then i buy other brands or the "Brown bag columbian" the one i have been drinking is okay , not outstanding but at least it tatstes like coffee

Costco (Kirkland) Coffee

We like the Costco brand, whatever that is, King-something?

Costco's house brand (Kirkland) coffee seems to be regionalized and ever-changing.

Here in the SFBay area the Kirkland brand coffees are identified on the bags as coming from a roaster in San Francisco; there are 3 or 4 varieties of Kirkland brand coffee, most are in 2 or 3 Lb. bags of whole bean coffee and run $4 or $5/Lb.

Used to be the local Costco offered Sumatra coffee, among others, (which I have not tried)

This has been recently replaced by New Guinea coffee which is good for the price (about $5/Lb. USD).

Not my favorite coffee, but good stuff.

Years ago I got hooked on Barnie's Sulawesi Kalosi (Sumatran) medium roast. Barnie's here closed, but I still get it on line. In a pinch, I was using Starbucks Sulawesi which is not as over roasted as most of their coffees, but that has now become a "seasonal" coffee with them.

Right now I am roasting Organic Ethiopia Idido Misty Valley. It is sourced from smallholder "garden coffee farms" in the surrounding areas of the famed Yirgachefe district in Sidamo. It is wonderfully berry fruited with a semisweet chocolate finish.
There are alot of single origin coffees out there that do stand out as exceptional. You just have to find them.
It is worth the effort.

Smooth but a rich coffee taste.

I was a fan of Eight O'Clock Coffee, but no more.

My boss let me bring home a cool looking (empty) wooden barrel yesterday.

The Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee comes in these barrels. As luck would have it, there was still a handfull of green beans rattling around in the bottom. I took them and slow roasted them in my toaster oven last night, let them sit over night, then ground them and made a cup just about an hour ago. A little weaker than the Columbian that I like, but very smooth.

Ahhhhh, the benefits of working in the industry.

Oh, BTW. Watch out for the "blends". Some manufacturers put as little as 1%, that's ONE percent of the expensive bean in their "blend" then charge a premium price. It's a rip-off. Your better off buying pure Kona, mixing it with say 20-30% with Columbian Arabica yourself. Then you get the fuller Kona flavor, but cut the cost of drinking it "straight".

Check the label---More honest blenders will sometimes disclose their blend percentage.

2 months ago there was an article on-line regarding "The Best Coffee, The Winner Will Surprise You" or something like that. The winner was 8 O'Clock / Columbian. We bought a bag then and are still buying it now. Prior to that it was Peets then Starbucks for as long as I can remember.
