The biggest Speaker cabinets I have ever seen !

It'd take a LOT of those 8" passives to do anything. You need AT LEAST the same cone area as the woofer- preferably more. It'd wind up looking like a Polk SDA on the rear of the cabinet. :D

As for PRs? Find some dead Peavey Black Widow baskets (Peavey sells replacement baskets to recone these, so there are lots of dead basket around, without magnets), install an appropriate cone, dustcap and spider, and add weight to tune to the appropriate frequency. That's what I do, sometimes. In fact, I have a project going on here at work... about 8 cubic foot cabinets, were originally dual-15"... I'm going back in with an Eminence Kappa 18 and an 18" PR based on a Black Widow 18" basket, made by this method, per cabinet. Calculated F3 of 33 Hz, efficiency of 95dB/1w... which should be FINE for a PA sub!

Regards,
Gordon.

I agree about old drivers as passives.

Steve, call Audiolight on Grand River and see if he has a couple shot 18" drivers. If the surrounds and cones are good, remove the mags and Bob's you uncle.

I've been to Audiolight.. that guys got stuff to the ceiling...

The biggest speakers i´ve seen were chechoslovakian tesla akr-303 cinema speakers from 1960s. Boy they were huge. 200lbs each, 7ft tall, 32" wide. In my listening room they looked like radars or something. Sound came from the roof :) really scary :bat::bat: i sold them after a week...never again unless i live in a church :)

:yikes: Those look like radiant heaters on top ! A week seems about right !

If you get some Peaveys, you won't even have to remove the magnet, probably. Peavey makes replacement baskets; the magnet from the speaker driver un-bolts from the basket, and bolts onto the new basket. If anyone has repaired those, there are likely old baskets laying around, sans magnet...

Gordon.

That makes it very easy. The company I mentioned, Audiolight, is local and should have the Peaveys.

If those boxes were mine, I'd put the dual 15" in each and cross them at 80-100Hz, and make a pair of 3-way satellite boxes for the high end. This will make placement and imaging mush easier.

I have a pair of Patrician 800 and only use the 30W as subs, the satellites are 12" coaxials with a mid-horn, tri-amped.

The PR idea is interesting; if you use regular woofers, you can alter its characteristics by terminating its terminals with an impedance. It'd be fun to play with.

I have a call into Audiolight,I left a message for him to call me.
I don't see it in the budget,but we'll see what goes.:D

He does not start work until after 1 pm. It should be cheap to do if they are fried speakers. Ever better if he can keep the mags.

Progress?

A little bit.Lots of interruptions today..:dammit:
I took the time to put driver placement into perspective. This is just a first look at full scale. I may decide to move everything down and put the tweeter on top,as Gordon suggested.
This is assuming ports on the back,or passives. Right now availability of 4 18" baskets and $$'s are the deciding factor on that issue. :sigh:

Remember, the very front edge of the mid-horn will protrude approx 7 1/2" from the mounting face (baffel). If you place the tweeter on same plane and vertically close to it, the dispersion of the tweeter will be affected by the mid-horn body.

Yeah, that's why I like the arrangement pictured.

Looking at my Sentry, even that far out from center the lip of the mid-horn still has a pretty substantial overhang... You may consder hanging the tweeter off of some brackets like the pro version. I believe Gordon mentioned that very early in thread, it would get rid of a lot of problems for sure.

Hmmmmm......ya know, the way I am set up now my ST350A's sit right on top of the SM120A with a simple bracket to hold it in place,I could literally put it on top of the horn.
Yep, I like it !
It would also allow me to show off my big shiny bastiches if I feel the need.

no doubt it would make the system way more flexible. you could change out to the t350's on a whim, mount above or below the horn as you please. If you later decide to install on baffle that could be done easily as well.

I don't find that big of a diff with not aliegning the mid and tweet. It seems to be more of an issue between the mid and the woof. It is not the lip you have to alien, it is the driver and given that, the tweet would be WAAAAAAAY back there. The lip is where the sound comes out of the horn, the driver, or diaphragm, is where it origanates....and that is the key thing.
