The cover better than the original

As much as I appreciate Neil Young for writing such a tune and his outstanding guitar work on said tune I still like this.

Carrie Rodriguez & Tim Easton ~ Cortez The Killer

Um, "Triad" wasn't a cover.

It was written by David Crosby, yes, but Jefferson Airplane's was the first published recording of it.

If you would axually READ the article, you would see just what I said--David Crosby wrote the song, while he was a member of the Byrds, the other members rejected it and it was never released until Crosby gave it to Jefferson Airplane, who published it for the first time on Crown of Creation.

It's just like any other song written by someone other than the band that recorded it. Nobody says Badfinger was covering "Come and Get It," even though it was written by Paul McCartney.

Recorded, maybe, but not released.

So if Paul McCartney had made a recording of "Come and Get It" before giving it to Badfinger, then theirs would be a cover, even if McCartney never released it? Or, it would only BECOME a cover if McCartney released his earlier recording of it 20 years later?

Why does everyone around here grasp at the thinnest straws of hope, instead of just admitting when they are wrong?

I keep thinking of so many Byrds classics- Pete Seeger's "Bells of Rhymney" has been stuck in my head all day, but it's the Byrds version.

It sure seems like a cover, regardless of "release" date.

If I were an artist/musician and someone wrote, recorded and performed Triad and then gave it to me, I would know Triad wasn't really my song (except legally) as it was written, performed and recorded by someone else previous to me .
That's just me.

I may take heat for this but anyone who covers a Bob Dylan song, does a better version than the original.

I was going to disagree, but then I listened to Cat Power's version of Stuck Inside Of Mobile (something I hadn't heard before). Yep, better..even tho she's channeling Dylan.

And, no, the Dead's version isn't better.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

Since Stephen Foster has already been mentioned, I'll toss out this cover of Beautiful Dreamer by Raul Malo, I like this even more than the Orbison version.
I guess it's better than the original, can't seem to find any Stephen Foster records...
