The "I Missed It by THAT MUCH" thread

...and the sick feeling in my gut has returned. Saw an estate sale with a listing for a Teac X1000R reel to reel in black, and I've been looking to upgrade my mid-grade Sony. Photos looked immaculate, but reel to reels often need significant work at significant expense, so they're a somewhat high risk endeavor. Got to the sale this morning early, but not first in line. I was hoping they hadn't been looking at prices for refurbished machines and would take $500, which I thought was fair for an untested machine. I got in the door about 5 minutes after the first person and couldn't find the machine, so I asked. They told me the first guy in the door bought it and pointed to it sitting by the front door waiting to be carried out. The thing was beautiful. Looked extremely well cared-for. The gut-punch? It was marked sold for $100. :(

That is why I don't go to estate sales...often. Next time I would go earlier than you think. Extremely early, even.

Saw a Kenwood KA-405 a couple years ago on FB marketplace some number of months ago in a lot of 8-9 other receivers. Idiot seller said it was a bidding auction, and that if saw it a couple hours earlier I could have gotten it for about 50 bucks...

... still looking on & off for a real cheap vintage "VU Meter" integrated amp...

Also fairly recently I was on eBay when I saw a Lumix LX5 pop up as "untested"...for about 50 bucks, even though I already have an LX3. Went to do some quick research and compare it to my LX3, and when I came back 3 minutes later to buy it I saw that it had already sold

Ok, one more...

Back in 2022 MisterPig very generously sent me a PM here on AK saying he'd be willing to send me some v. nice Scansonic mk V's for the cost of shipping. But unfortunately due to parental reasons at the time, I sadly had to decline the Pig's offer and let them go. I just hope they went to another AK member.

Tbh looking back it now, I didn't know what I was thinking and made a real fool of myself looking the gift horse in the mouth. Lesson learned...

Still kicking my ass for that one every now and then, even if I'm happy with what I currently have (Visonik David 502's + Mirage PS-8 sub).
I tell you what. PM me if you want to go through with this. Figure out how to get up to Olympia. I will give you these. Scansonic MK V, they are a more affordable brand made by Radioho, a Danish high end company.

A few terms.

Don't sell them.
Quit buying junk. Save your money for a decent piece of gear.
Sell the other stuff so you can afford a decent amp, speaker stands, and what not.

No joke. They are yours if you want to start this journey of good audio sound.

Here they are. And a bit more info.

Well yeah. The problem with that is that 99% of the time they're asking too much - especially on day 1 of the sale, because they know they can lower it to half price on day 2 - so I'd be spending half my life getting up early on Fridays for nothing. And even when I have gotten there very early, there's always some guy who slept in his car and started a list. So for those of us with an actual life it's a losing proposition. Still stings.

I miss @Mister Pig, he could be a swine but was altogether a good pig.

A long while back I was at my favorite record store and as I was checking out saw a couple albums behind the counter. I asked about them and the seller said they just came in and if I wanted they were $50 a piece. They were both in like new condition. It was The Beatles (white) album #39xx and DSOTM (UK Harvest Q4SHVL 804) quad. I didn't have enough cash on me and thought I already other pressings of those already. Dang.
