The "I Missed It by THAT MUCH" thread

I almost had my first Fairchild - the 260 amp. Currently on vacation in Florida (Navarre). Decided to check the Craigslist. Came across a 260 in Panama City (2 hours away). It was as-is, untested, figured maybe I could get it cheap(ish)! Of course it was just picked up this morning. Anyone here get it? He had some other stuff listed too, not sure if the buyer got it all. I remember seeing a Fisher mono amp and some other decent tube stuff.

Makes me think of a Musical Fidelity A308 I saw about two years ago on that other Audio Site that sat for a couple weeks at the same price. The A308 would blow the Marantz away. Always wanted that Integrated Amp!
 
I went to an amazing estate auction in my neighborhood. There was a Sequerra tuner there, but they would not let me plug it in. I promised myself I wouldn't spend over $600; I think it sold for $650. If it works, that guy gut a deal! Day-Sequerra says the FM Reference needs an IBOC filter; they will install that and a new display for $3,200!! IBOC is brutal on my favorite station, so I tell myself I wouldn't have enjoyed it that much :-).
 
Just today. no reply from the seller and ad now pulled. NAD 3080 integrated looked super clean. Ad said everything works, sounds great, with boxes and manuals for $150.

Why wouldn't they let you plug it in?
 
On one hand, the people running the sale did not know audio, so they probably didn't realize the value that would add. On the other hand, the room was crowded with small expensive accessories; I think they understandably did not want a lot of people handling the gear. I think there must have been $60,000 invested in audio in that home. Wilson Watt/Puppy speakers, Jeff Rowland preamp, phono preamp and power amp, Linn turntable. All kinds of expensive cables, lots of older modified gear and headphones.

Someone should’ve given them a clue.
 
They were pretty responsive to requests from buyers but the mantra "sold as-is, where-is" is deeply ingrained. This company commits on their web site to empty your house in a day. A flipper at the sale told me that in today's hot realty market, people want houses transferred even more urgently than normal. They had all the manuals in one pile, but we persuaded them to give them to buyers of individual units! They also went along with the crowd's guidance on separating units. They were planning to auction the two Wilson speakers individually, but were persuaded to sell them as a pair. :)

Good lord, what a mess.
 
Studer ADAT machine for sale on CL for $100 last week. I was number two, said he'd call me if the deal fell through, which of course it never would at that price. Been the bridesmaid more than I could count over the years, but that's all part of the game.
 
Saw an ad for a pair of AR-LST 2's which needed work, but were offered for some ridiculously low price, I believe they were asking $175 or so. I'm not certain how much the seller knew about these speakers, as the ad photo showed the speakers sitting in the cargo area of a pickup truck!

I hesitated, but gave it some thought afterward and was going to contact the seller. Too late! They were already sold. If I'm not mistaken, member GD70 purchased them. I have to say, they couldn't have gone to a nicer guy, as Glenn has been most generous in sharing his knowledge of speaker restoration with both the Audiokarma and Classicspeaker pages community.

I've had my share of good karma with vintage gear finds, so no complaining!
 
A while back I was going through FB Marketplace and found a listing for this complete B&O System (it’s the one pic I saved) for the price of ….. FREE - yea it was gone by the time I responded.
