It was the opening day at a Value Village in Barrhaven. I had been waiting all summer for it. Get into the store, and spend a bit of time looking for the electronics section. A guy had a couple of silver faced receivers, a Technics SL-1200 in good condition, and one of those automatic adc turntable in his cart. I look around, and all I see is an Aiwa M700B in black face. Gorgeous unit, test it, it lights up, but cassette won’t turn. It’s $24. I get it anyway, because it so nice.
Get it home, and the belts are glue. Decide to bring it to my local cassette tech, and it sits there for a year and a half. During this time, I was teaching myself about tapedecks. I had already done a few belt changes, and fixed other issues in two others. I had even ordered and received a belt kit when I thought I was going to try fixing it myself. Got it back, and nothing had been done with it. Guy had a stroke, recovered, and decided he didn’t want to work on tape drives anymore. I changed the belts the first evening, and encountered another problem, not belt related. Couldn’t figure it out, so I slept on it. I was supposed to work the next morning, but woke up with the itch to dig back into it. Had to mcgyver a part, but it’s still working two years later! It’s a keeper!
But I’ve never had a Technics sl-1200 before, and would love to try one. Same for the adc. The receivers were ok, but nothing jumped out at me. Decent scores though. I’m happy that I even got a tape deck! It was a zoo in there!
