More mid-century fun in the Wal-Mart network...Just got this chair at Sam's Club.

It's a knockoff of an Eames/Herman Miller design. http://www.hermanmiller.com/Products/Eames-Soft-Pad-Chairs

It's also less bulky and more comfortable than my old desk chair. It'll look nice with the Lovig desk, once I get it moved in here later this week. The price wasn't terrible, either.

they're not bad, quite comfy.

I picked up a few pieces from an auction at my work today.A coffee table,two end tables(only 1 pictured,and a sofa chair.I dont know if these qualify as mid century modern,but I loved the style.

Best I can tell, it's a free-standing encyclopedia/reference book stand. Solid wood, dovetail joints. Lectern-like edge on the slanted top. I may put a flat top on it (with thick and matching triangular 'wedges') and use it for an audio rack... or I may simply refinish it for the OED and the Britannicas as a Prei-Deux of knowledge.

It came out of the old, abandoned, decidedly MCM Dallas Public Library.

It's totally trashed out inside. Shame. I'm pushing for it to be used as the library for the new law school that's going in nearby (in the old Carnegie-built City Hall/Municipal Courts).

I also tried to get UNT to locate it's new Dallas campus here... using the adjacent and abandoned Statler-Hilton as classroom space and dorm housing.
That's the library on the left. The dark marble panel with the studded 'hand-like' place is where a large sculpture (in Soviet People's-hero-realism style) of an open hand with a bare-chested young man holding up a book used to be.

Victims of sprawl and hyper-aggressive suburban communities. The Hilton has low ceilings making condo-conversion very problematic, but attempts keep being made.

Both buildings are younger than I am. ;-)

Went to the only yard sale I could find today, got there late 2pm. Walking in the garage and found this in the corner. $3.00. Looks like it could be Walnut or Teak.
Not sure if it should have the lamp shade on it, looks better without it. Only name I could find was Levolier they made the socket.
Any ideas who might have made this?

The slanted top makes it look podiumish...being a library, I'd guess a big book used to sit there. I second the audio rack proposal, although something tells me it might look a little wacky w/the short angled legs. An LP rack or book case seems more appropriate now that I think about it.

That library for some reason screamed ballet school the 2nd I saw it. Don't know why. But something along the arts kind of seems appropriate....drafting is dead, so maybe architecture or fine arts..

The loss of those buildings would be a tragedy. I guess a lot of the hope for modernism died off with suburban sprawl. I just wish it had sprawled into Case Study-type housing instead of McMansions, because I'd love to live in a small, simple but spacious MCM home.

It is very difficult to preserve gems from that era let alone build any appreciation for them. Its as if they are too old to keep but also too new to landmark. Who knows why.

But there is hope. A couple of developments with classic MCM houses have landmarked themselves around here and in other places.

Finally found my mid-century couch yesterday! One small town I travel to for work has quite a few mid-century ranch homes, but the furniture rarely turns up in the local thrift (or anywhere else I've found). Notable exception, the green and gold chair I posted quite a while back, before the start of this thread, came from the same thrift. Anyway, I stopped in over my lunch break and found this beauty. Went back after my work was done and laid down the cash. I have two weeks to get it out of the store, now I need to get my old couch sold.

The fabric looks almost like new with no rips or stains, and the foam cushions are all firm and shapely. The only damage I found at all was a few snags in the black cloth under the body of the couch while futilely looking for a manufacturer's tag. Unlike most mid-century couches I've found, which have tended to be about 10 feet long - or more - this one is a perfect size. I can just barely lay down comfortably between the arms.
