The New Advents

Susurus: is that walnut veneer, or oak? On my monitor at least it sure looks like oak! Because in a brochure I have from around 1984(?) for the 5000 series, there is a photo of one with optional light-oak veneer much like what Infinity was using at the time. I have never seen one of those before.

What's that JBL titanium tweeter sound like paired with the Advent woofer?

^ Definitely uncommon! I remember thinking how modern they looked in the brochure since walnut was kind of on the way out at the time, but also that they had a kind of 50s-retro vibe i.e. the pairing of the light tan grill with the light veneer. They look quite cool too without the grills (the oak contrasting with the black baffle I guess).

I had a feeling that "tingly" titinium tweeter wasn't going to blend well with the "calm" Advent woofer.

Actually there were two models of the original "large" Advents, there were the deluxe Advents with walnut cabinets and beveled edges and utility Advents with a vinyl covering without the beveled edges. They both had the three way switch. I think they both were identical in mechanics and performance. I had the deluxe Advents, but eventually sold them.

They only came with one tweeter. Didn't know what it was, thanks for telling me it's a JBL [not! --added later.]! Probably trade that to someone who can use it.

If somebody's scanned in that brochure I'd love to see it. One cool thing about vintage speakers and receivers is the phases of schools of design they represent. My white grill/oak sides Maggies go with these.

One of my rooms should be Danish Modern, one 60s psychodelia, ... ::):

New pics, oak Advents paired up with oak M&K sats, tweeter unhooked.

If I go active biamp here and raised on stands this could be very modern sounding system!

Well actually I'm only 99% sure it's a JBL - the reason for the 1% of doubt :) is that I've seen clones of JBL's tweeters that IIRC look identical except for the JBL logo (I can't see if yours has the logo or not).

I know I didn't throw out my brochure, but after three separate search missions, I still cannot find it (I already scanned and posted the manual for the Advent 6003, their 1st three way speaker).

Thanks for the 6003 manual scan.

I may eventually find exact 5002/5012 tweeters.

Meanwhile this Oak pair-up may really suit one of my rooms. The sats are inefficient, have adjustable xovers. Designed for a powered sub but with Advents it could be a decent match (the 4 Peerless tweets alone are worth way more than I snagged them for. :) )

GT-336 tweets

Okay I found a link. They are Goldwood cheap cheap importeds flooding the market, 7 bucks from PE. Out they go.

Course I should thank Goldwood! ::) With intact orig. tweeters, would those Advents have been for sale?

No, they would be in my living room with my large advents. Glad you are getting some use out of them.
Chris.

Thanks Chris, yes they are getting lotsa attention! I refoamed them and plan on refinishing the cabs sometime.

Would enjoy your opinion on your new Polks compared to your mains.

Be sure to tilt the Advent cabinets back a few degrees, that will (slightly) help time-align the tweeters which protrude forward from the cabinet front on a small baffle. I didn't know about the raised baffle til you showed me. (This is kinda backwards--since the high frequencies travel faster than lows.)

Back to the 5012/O...nice to have the grills intact! Maybe steam clean the stains? Two-layer cloth there. (Not enough to tame that Ti tweet).

Some doner/parts unit may contribute Nameplates someday.

If the fuse holder caps are standard, I can find replacements. Better than my temporary bypassing. :thumbsdn:

Not a fan of bypassing...a 25-cent fuse saved my DQ-10 at the recent AK get together. :D:D

When sound travels through air, all frequencies travel at the same speed (340 meters per second). By contrast, for some types of vibration traveling through a structure such as a wall or floor, low frequencies travel faster than high frequencies.

Tilting loudspeakers to improve time coherency is just an attempt to more closely align the voice coils of the drivers or where the sound originates from the drivers.
