The Official Flexy Rack Thread

Alright I'll play. 1st one is a spare equipment storage flexy. I built it out of scrap corian and 1/2 rod. It's nothing fancy but it holds rotation gear quite nicely. The other one holds my main rig. 1/2" threaded rod, 3/4 oak ply and 1/4" trim to cover the rough edges. I flushed out the nuts even with the rods on the bottom and added the same sized felt pads on them. Even with all 200 plus lbs the rack slides around nicely when it has to. Nothing fancy again but it also does it's job quite well. Although the bottom shelf is bowing a bit under the weight of the 2500.

I found out just how hard corian is to cut. I had a sharp blade in my 15 amp porter cable circular saw and I had to go slooooow as it was really bogging it down. Should've worn a mask to as the dust has a particularly nasty plastic odor to it.

If you turn, you would have already made wood finials, I guess. There are plenty of metal finials out there or you could fashion just a cover out of metal, there is a lot of different tube and pipe sold.

Right you are west end, but I don't turn I'll come up with something here pretty quickly.
 
I've decided to use 3/4-inch plywood with 3/4-inch threaded rod. Does anyone have a recommendation for how far from the edge the rod should be?
 
1/2" rod, some butcher block left over from a kitchen project, steel washers, rubber washers and some stain.... voila`my garage/shop system has a home.

Spreading the load even more certainly won't hurt. I used rubber caster cups on mine to add a little dampening. Questionable benefit there I suppose, but what the heck?

Well, as in the photos above, I want some distance between the edge of the washer and the corner of the wood. It looks to me like there's a good 1.5" in the one with the butcher block. That would put the center of the rod hole about 2.5" from the corner.

How much space (width) should each "compartment" have? I'm thinking at least 19" and probably more. At this point, since I'm doing a double-wide rack, I wonder if I should just say screw it and do 48x24. I'll be buying three sheets of plywood that size anyway.

Never hurts to have a little extra room.:yes: That is if your room can handle it.:scratch2:
 
Just built these. My wife is ok with my hobby as long as I keep it in this one closet. And as long as guests can still hang clothes in it. So, I want to have two systems, each with two turntables. I built the bases with two thicknesses of plywood and put some casters on them. Now i can roll them sideways and make room form guests using the closet. This is a work in progress, I hope to remove the old shelf and build a nice one to hold vinyl. Also the carpet will go sometime. I may convert the casters to swivels then so I can turn the racks to facilitate getting behind them easier. Wires are messy, but by mounting the power strips mid high the cords don't lay on the floor and it should be easy to slide the racks left to right when necessary....

Things have changed since my post in 2014, just using a modded Marantz CD-65 as source, gave the other Flexy to a friend after making a wider and more stable one, thicker rods (4 instead of 3 and did away with the rubber washers) and the bottom of the rods sit
on Whites Anti-vibration blocks.

The first flexy I made I used 3/8 rod and tried to use cushioning between the washers. That didn't work well, to wobbly. These are now 5/8 rod. I found that the thicker shelves on the bottom, more shelves, no cushioning between shelf and washers plus tightening the nuts well gave me the strength I was looking for.
