Sadly my experience here in Italy with a powder coating enterprise was very bad. They put a lot of coating on 1200 and whit a sh@t finishing, I had to re-strip it with chemical product, then a new sanding and now finally seems I found the correct product for optimal compromise in finish/durability, 2k epoxy primer and 2k epoxy paint.
Some picture coming sonn, for now just let you show the self-made jig to work on 1200s, I built it in MDF and wonder how the spongy jig selling on ebay is able to carry safely 12kgs of 1200....surely I wouldn't try it with one of mine TT...

Okay, well, then, there, now, I think I almost have my M3D dialed in.

New thick mat. (It is amazing how thick 1/4 of an inch can look on a turntable!)

New turntable cover on back order.

Spindle oil on hand.

KAB record clamp on hand.

VTA reset to 4 (but I'm not sure about this. Might be sweeter around 3.5 to 3.7--still checking it out).

Cue lever adjusted for new mat.

VTF set to 2.0.

Anti-skate backed off about .4 for a setting of 1.6.

All systems go.

Yes, you're exactly right.

I would invite all the crictics/dectrators to disassemble one of it (if they can...) to appreciate the beautiful engineering and construction, it's not a cheap lil' motor with a belt and and insanely heavy platter...
 
I have my SL 23 now too with a Shure M97xe cart. Could I swap out head shells easily--switch the SL 23 and SL 1200 head shells (carts and all) so I can check out the 97 on my 1200, and the M44-7 on my SL 23? Or is it more involved than that?

I would of course re-balance the arms, and reset VTF and anti-skate.

How much of an improvement would there be replacing the arm with a SME 3009 II?
I will be using the V15 III or V15 V when I get one.
 
New SL1200 owner here. I only wish I had bought one awhile back before they went out of production and pricing went up. The build quality and sound quality is still comparable to expensive decks. I was impressed taking this out of the box, and liked the way it plays my jazz records especially. I dont know if they all are, but mine is for use in US and for overseas voltages. Can I change the prong plug/adapter/fuse arrangement to just a regular plug. Also Some left to right swaying on strobe dot instead of still, I heard some platters do this and others don't and it is not a motor problem. Any advice welcome.

Usually the AN6680 is the problem, the dot MUST appear still.
 
Set up the SL-23 right next to the SL-1200. They look pretty together. The Sl-23 has the 97xe cart but I'm thinking of switching that to the SL-1200, and the M44-7 on the 1200 to the SL-23.

What a difference a cart makes! The M97xe is nowhere near as loud as the M44-7. But it seems to have a bigger range. On the other hand, the M44-7 is nice and punchy.

I'm totally at a loss at this point as to which I prefer, and which on which turntable.

Any thoughts?

The M97xE, with its elliptical stylus, will extract more detail and refinement than the M44-7.

Considering it was introduced in 1963, it's no surprise that the M44-7, with its conical stylus, excels with early mono LPs and 45s (ie: pre-1968). It can also come in handy for records with lots of wear. The conical tip glides above the section of the groove worn by a dull or misaligned elliptical stylus, yielding less distortion and crackle during playback, but at the expense of refinement and detail. But it does pack a powerful wallop, which is one reason that club DJs have kept it in production.

In other words, they are both good to have around!

Knock, Knock, may I come in

Woohoo, Look what I picked up today! Never thought I would own one at a price I could afford.

It's had a hard DJ life, and I think was made in 1985. The top plinth needs taking care of, the power switch is missing, a foot is missing, and there's rust on the tonearm. And the RCA cables need replacing (which I have just done on my Sony PS-X7 as well).

Having said that, it works, is silent, no play in the tonearm and keeps perfect speed (and quickly too).

Will work on it over the summer, and take my time making it nice. The best bit was it cost $40.
