Stereo Sound No. 79 (issued in June 1986)

Special feature ・ From "How did the latest power amplifier draw out the appeal of speakers? Recommended power amplifier 39 x representative speaker 16 80 different sound reports"

(Listen on Pioneer S9500DV) It's a perfect
combination. The band extends naturally, and the thickness of the low range peculiar to S9500DV is added to the suppleness of the mid-low range of M90, and considering the price, there is more quality and fun than expected. As for the sound field feeling, the SN ratio of the hearing feeling is very excellent as a power amplifier, so the visibility is good and the sound image localization is three-dimensional. In particular, the perspective is outstanding with the addition of speaker characteristics, and if you use the CD direct input, you will get even more benefits. The program source is straightforward and easy to use.

Stereo Sound No. 79 (issued in June 1986)
Special feature ・ From "Ability test of 48 latest power amplifiers listening with CD player / direct connection"

It is an amplifier that gives you an extremely wide range and strength only for new products. Still, the texture of the strings is warm and does not dry out. The freshness of the sound was high, and the transparent space reproduction was also excellent. For my personal taste, I want a slightly more fluffy roundness, but I think it's a high-quality playback sound. Due to the delicacy of the fantasy pp, the crescendo ff is well stable and does not show any distortion in the sound shaping. It's a brilliant and tense brass, but it's preferable to have moderation that doesn't make it flashy. Jazz was also very satisfying.

Sound quality: 9.0
Attractiveness considering price: 9.0

Stereo Sound No. 79 (issued in June 1986)
Special feature ・ From "Ability test of 48 latest power amplifiers listening with CD player / direct connection"

It is an amplifier that allows you to hear the true clear sound by finely polishing the sound particles and smoothing it. The band balance on hearing is wideband type, the texture of the mid-low range is slightly thin, and there is a character that is a potential character of the unique mid-high range, considering that it is a common character in this audition. , This amp seems to show that it is fairly straightforward and has excellent basic characteristics. The characteristics of the program source are clearly drawn out, especially the expansion of the stereophonic sound field and the sound image that stands naturally with a three-dimensional effect are wonderful.

Sound quality: 8.5
Attractiveness considering price: 9.3

Pioneer Elite in this test above was higher ranked in terms of sound than sansui b2301l, sansui b 2201l, accuphase p300 , luxman 360 tube

The Pioneer C90 and M90 pair, which was planned as a separate amplifier compatible with AV program sources, was the first successful and significant product of this type. This time, the content was reviewed in the original sense, and it was released as the second generation C90a and M90a by improvement.
Since the C90a is originally a model that is compatible with AV sources and aims for high quality sound quality, it is newly equipped with an S terminal for Y / C separation connection of luminance signal and color signal in the video system input / output, and S-VHS. We are trying to support high-quality VTRs such as ED beta and ED beta. The attached remote controller has evolved from the conventional system remote controller for the company to a learning remote controller with a maximum of 154 keys, eliminating the complexity of having to use a large number of remote controllers properly.
Visually, there seems to be little change in appearance, but improvements and enhancements related to the housing are also important parts for control amplifiers that require high sound quality.
The top plate of the housing has been improved from a C90 iron plate with a thickness of 1.2 mm to an aluminum plate with a thickness of 1.6 mm that is rigidly fixed by a total of eight set screws so that vibration does not occur. The vertical length vent pattern of the bottom plate has changed to Pioneer's original honeycomb type, which controls the vibration mode of the bottom plate and brakes the resonance. The legs have changed from a general type with a bell cross section to a larger type with a honeycomb cross section filled with a special resin.
In the electronics system, the points are complete separation and independence of the video signal and audio signal. (1) A dedicated power transformer is used for the left and right audio channels and the video system. And video system floating, ③ audio system and video system electrical and mechanical jump prevention isolation, ④ video power supply auto OFF function adoption when using analog, etc. There is.
It seems that the input of know-how that does not appear on the surface is considerable only for the advanced model based on C90.
Oxygen-free copper wiring material, brass cap resistor, shielded capacitor, etc., which inherit the flow of EXCLUSIVE, are fully adopted for the parts related to the design with the highest priority on sound quality. It is also a point not to be overlooked that the phono equalizer amplifier, which can be said to be the center of analog audio, uses a hybrid MC transformer system to maintain the quality of MC reproduction.
For M90a, the material of the housing top plate is changed from iron plate to aluminum, the mounting method is the same as C90a, 8 + 1 screws, the shape of the ventilation hole of the bottom plate is changed, and the leg part is modified. The size of the fifth leg on the underside of the transformer frame has been increased, and the same type as the other legs was used in the M90, but this time it has been changed to a cast iron insulator that is made of cast iron and has a high damping effect.
The power transformer has been upgraded from a simple type in which the iron core is fastened with a band to a casted power transformer housed in a cast iron case with a vibration damping structure unique to Pioneer. Along with this, the strength of the transformer frame has also been improved, and the measures against vibration of the power transformer have been further strengthened. In addition, the honeycomb structure chimney type of the heat sink is also aimed at total vibration control of the power stage.
As a result of these significant improvements, the weight has increased from 20.9 kg for the M90 to 28 kg.
In terms of functionality, it inherits all the concepts of the M90, which was developed as a power amplifier with functions that can be used alone, such as having an input that can control two volumes in addition to the control input and allowing direct use of a power amplifier such as a CD player. I'm out.
The C90a and M90a are amplifiers with a dignified and well-extruded natural sound. In terms of price, it is in a position to compete with high-end integrated amplifiers, and it is difficult to decide whether to take the name of a separate type or the cohesive sound unique to an integrated amplifier, but this pair has such a frame. It is attractive that it has a convincing sound unique to a separate type amplifier that exceeds it.
Basically, it inherits the sound unique to Pioneer, which is soft, rich, and flexibly supports a wide range of program sources and combinations, but it is a good amp from the previous work, which has a slightly passive meaning. , It has grown into an amplifier that allows you to listen to a mature and fulfilling content and a sufficiently convincing sound. It's been a long time since I heard it.

Stereo Sound No. 84 (issued in September 1987)
Special feature: From "Personal test of 26 power amplifiers in the price range of less than 500,000 yen"

Two prominent products are the Pioneer M90 and Technics SE-A100. In both cases, the power amplifier is an orthodox designed and completed model that adheres to the basic principle of being a voltage / power converter.
In terms of sound quality, the M90, which has sufficiently high quality and allows you to listen to stable and enjoyable music with plenty of time, and the SE-A100, which tries to hear good sound accurately while maintaining high sound purity, are quite similar. It has a contrasting sound and charm. Both are faithful to the basics,

Pioneer Elite M90a/C90a got Best product distinction, which was given to Best components at the Time. Similar distinction got for instance Luxman mq360/cl 360 set (670 000 yen/13000 dm cost).
Im quite suprised Elite components are not more appreciated here.

Opinion from french forum
"Otherwise, when listening (but keep in mind that this material is around twenty years old and has never undergone the slightest intervention, no change in the capacitors for example), there is power (2 x 200 watts per channel sour 8 ohms and from 20 to 20,000 hz) but also very smooth. It is very correct timbre and has a fairly wide bandwidth (enough for all ears) and very linear. It offers a fairly wide scene and stamps that know how to be clear when necessary.
This set is, in any case, very qualitative and it will be necessary to "hit high" to exceed it"

Opinion about pioneer Elite from forum audio

"Does anyone here have experience with Pioneer's C-90 pre-stage or their M-90 power stage. I know the products are a few years old, but I'm still interested.

I heard them last week in a setup I've heard many times before, but then with an Accuphase E-405 as amplifier. I have to say that I was extremely surprised when the difference between the Pioneer combination and the Accuphase was significantly smaller than I had thought, "

Stereo magazine, November 1988. Pioneer Elite c90a/m90a review

It has a very strong and clear dynamism. The clear atmosphere of the tight system is the axis, but the transparency and resolution are also high. Therefore, it tends to be produced with a lively and powerful touch. The dynamic feeling of the bass is quite attractive, but the preamplifier C-90a has a slightly bright, smooth and silky refreshing feeling, so if you combine it, it feels like it's just in harmony. There are few products in this price range, but it has a fairly full-fledged expressive power. Not only does it have bass horsepower, but it also has resolution, and the three-dimensional effect comes out quite richly. Even if you listen to large-scale songs in an orchestra or listen to jazz, there is a sense of depth. The outline of the sound is also clear. And it is tied thickly in the high range. Isn't it a clear and dynamic amp? (Fukuda)

According to Stereo review magazine from 1989, hiend range fell between 1500 USD and 5000 USD. So pioneer Elite c90a/m90a was definitely hiend back then, with price approx 2700usd

Screenshot_20230409-084245.jpg

Whats interesting pioneer c90a /m90a, m90, m91 is not the only one that used Toshibas a1516 transistors. Accuphase also was using a1516 in Such models as p360, p300v, e305 or hiend p800.
Guess these Toshiba a1516 were nice transistors

Pioneer Elite c90 /C90a, m90 /m90a /m91 has pure OFC internal wiring supplied by hirakawa, Sumitomo and Hitachi. Its interesting cause this kind of wiring can be seen in a more expensive gear like tube AMP luxman cl360/mq 360 (680.000 yen) or marantz sc1000/sm700 (above 1 million yen). Elite was built better than the price suggests

I hate to disagree, but with digital source's like CD,s the transport is largely unimportant as long as it can read the difference between 0s and 1s, this is different than analog where the transport is super important. the DAC is the most important part form good audio from CD, and the reason these made it into the Elite range is they have very good DACs with the one in the PD-M95 being equivalent to the DAC in the PD-75, and the PD-M92 being similar to the PD-71. Here is a photo of the output section on the M95.
View attachment 1940511
Also I found the problem with the mechanism, there was a missing spring that once I located and put back in place fixed the problem, now it always loads the disc and both of my single disc adapters now work.

For many of us it's not about the DAC at all. That is the best part of this unit. The problem is about sliding discs in and out of a magazine. Those of us that treasure our CD's will never slide them into a cartridge magazine. The rest of the player is superb. It's just all about the Magazine that's the negative issue.

So i found next interesting thing about pioneer Elite separates. This Time its about preamp c90. C90 has some parts that were used also in Pioneer exclusive c7.
Both in Elite c90 and exclusive c7 were used 2sc2878 and 2sc1845 transistors. C7 has 12 2sc2878. Also both in these preamps were used Soshin capacitors and mylar film capacitors.
After All Exclusive has a bit Elite dna.

i had a couple pioneer changers years ago. there was no "sliding cds in the magazine" unless they changed something after my experience, those magazines had trays that look exactly like a drawer for a player only they folded open instead of sliding open/closed. you set the cd in the same way as you set it in a drawer.

Just joined the forum and wanted to post a shot of my current rack/system. I’m in the process of obtaining a PD M90x to replace my current Elite PD M59 cd player. I have another M72 spare in case I need it…

I searched for Pioneer Elite and found this thread. Quite interesting, I didn't realize the Elite line had been around for so long. What got me looking is that I was gifted a Pioneer Elite SC-05, a home theater receiver. I looked up the specs and found out about the ice amp technology from B&O. Then I took off the top to remove the layer of dust and was surprised to see the interior sprinkled with Elna capacitors, something I hadn't seen in my Denon or Onkyo receivers from the 2002-20012 era. An interesting design, and the chassis was definitely built to a higher spec, more rigid than the aforementioned gear. This is something Yamaha goes to great lengths to achieve in their current hi fidelity amps(I have the A-S1100).

Though the theater receivers were at the low end of hifidelity, I've been quite surprised at the 2 channel audio quality of this model. It beats the Denon AVR 3806 in imaging and over all sound quality. At 40 lbs, the SC-05 is quite the beast.

Sad stuff for sure, but I love looking at it! Might be all I ever do. The main microprocessor is dead. No power whatsoever. Sad sad

Thank you for the good news about the SC-05. Some of my faith is now restored in Pioneers newer lineup. 40 Lbs is no joke and my DENON 3805 isn’t amazing sounding but certainly no slouch. My MARANTZ PM-7000 still sounds better to me than any of my many 40 to 50 lb HT receivers.

Picked up a mint C-91 preamp with remote, just a few weeks ago... sweet unit! Paid a fair but highball price because of the condition). Trying to get my Brother's Elite DVD player off him, to use as a transport... I don't need it, it's just the Elite gear looks amazing (the earlier Elite gear- they seemed to stick the name Elite on everything in the nineties)... :)
