I am not a fan of hard-core metal, as my son refers to it. I'm talking about the throaty vocals that accompany the music. I do like the music though. My son has played bass in several hard-core bands.

Once, they were recording a CD and he told me thay were finished except for adding the vocals. I asked him if I could get a copy before they added the vocals. He thought I was kidding. I was not not kidding. With that being said, I still go hear them play, because the musicianship is outstanding and not easy to play.

This is so true! And It's cool how you suport him nonetheless!! I think it's VERY important to support any of the arts.

While not my cup of tea either (i think it used to be called 'scream-o', kinda like emo, when i was in high school) those lines can be pretty peppy..really fast and impressive...

one example I love is Tim Reynolds song "Stream"...and it is just that! A 'stream' of notes pouring out of his guitar like a water from a hose.

and not one note out of place..

You'd think that I did something despicable to a family member when I said that I couldn't stand death metal. Some people hate it on evil/religious grounds and I respect that. I hate it kind of like a new form of unintelligible punk.

I will also reinforce that SLAYER is NOT death metal. Neither is slipknot, Pantera or dozens of other nu metal, prog metal, speed metal and thrash bands.

I will also corroborate that prog, thrash, speed metal and other types of metal are complex and daunting to play. What most people wouldn't give to play like Dime, Jordan Rudess or Dave Lombardo.

The underlying theme of this whole thread is tolerance. I find it that people who do not tolerate "X" band, cannot stand it if someone else does not tolerate their favorite band/music. Such a subjective thing that people try to make objective. TSK.

My take, for what it's worth(not much, I know), is that most of the digs in those other threads were in good fun. The OP didn't come across that way, IMO.
AK has a history of people giving digs about certain groups in good fun. Steely Dan, Rush, The Beatles, and The Black Crowes have all received a little "hate" here lately, but with a little humor.
I didn't get that from the first post. It just came across as a rant. Which is fine, but a rant will usually bring about a thread with a negative vibe.

If you want comical Death Metal, look no further than METALOCALYPSE.

I'm a big Metal fan but NOT of Death Metal, can't stand the stuff.
The only radio station I ever listen to anymore at home is a local classical station, however when they play blocks of opera I have to turn it off.

(C)rap and gansta (C)rap is left to the neighborhood playa, gangsta wanna-bes that drive in and out of my locale pounding they beats to impress the ladies......................NO THANX!!!!

The following are banned from my house:
Xmas noise (music) of all and any type!
Gangsta Rap and related - not into hearing about hos and bitches and killings and how great prison is etc.
Opera - I just don't get it and I don't understand or speak any other languages (except cockney, but that's a slang)
Modern day Country (or so-called) - Why is that crap called Country music? I prefer the real stuff.
Death Metal or anything else that's just screaming and uninteligible cookie monster vocals.

Don't forget Mumford & Sons, those smelly sweater wearing, pretentious banjo soloing weasels that attract a shitload of college chicks to their concerts.

I'm shocked to see opera pop up so often in this thread. I actually attend about one opera a year. In the right mood, an opera is almost as entertaining as a modern dance show. Both opera and dance are more fun than a Neil Young show and the audiences are way better looking.

I did forget about them. The funny thing is, I'm so far behind the times that I've never listened to one of their albums, but I'm taking my kid to the library this afternoon and one of their CDs is on hold for me. So in a week or so I'll probably start a thread about how great they are, or a hate/bile thread. Unless I just think "meh". I won't start a thread for that. And I wash my sweaters. Stinky clothes are as bad as cookie monster metal.

I'm not sure where I stand on the banjo. I had a teacher in elementary school who would play it every so often. I hated it, but at least it took some time away from "learning". As time went on I've seen some cool shows with a banjo. The duo version of Big Sugar that used it on some tunes was cool. And Harry Manx plays it well. He even makes banjo jokes when he pulls it out.

I do not like operas and I do not like stupid music. Apart from that I like almost anything from Gregorian Chant to "Neue Musik" like Stockhausen. Almost anything from Scott Joplin to Frank Zappa.

No stupid music please, no stupid literature, no stupid people, no time for any stupidity - life is too short for bulls..t!

I have to LOL at people attaching my dislike of 3 genres to book burning fascism or somehow anthromophisizing music like it's a person with rights being oppressed or discriminated against. It's ok, i am allowed this kind of discrimination. There is no taste law that requires me to like the names genres. I didn't see any of this when specific bands were trashed on this forum. Hate Rush? Hate Journey? whats next? Killing babies and imprisoning teachers? GMAB. I am very eclectic, but happen to find 3 things totally and unflinchingly unlistenable. There is no attachment to anything else, so please refrain from linkage...it's just silly. And people can use headphones so it doesn't ruin my environment. I shall choose a path that's clear, I will choose freewill.

If you must "laugh out loud" at anyone, it's within your right to do so.

You (and I) may dislike or even hate (which I find a strong word) certain things in life. We are entitled to dislike. But to impose our dislikes on others to the point of banning material, I have a hard time accepting. This is my personal opinion.

It's one thing to dislike. It's a totally different thing to "ban".

So, in defense of my comment, today you ban music, tomorrow you ban books, next week you ban movies. Next month you ban what ?

My kids listened to all kinds of rap in their early teens. Soon enough, they got sick of it. My son now listens to classic rock and blues, plays the guitar and enjoys our conversations when discussing past blues artists. He makes fun of me when he finds me listening to jazz, calling me a "cool cat" and snapping his fingers to the beat. I laugh and say that maybe one day your kids will be doing the same with you. My daughter has had enough with the rap crap also. She now likes more mainstream music, melodic stuff, dance pop tunes. Pleasant, if I may add. I can dig it too! :)

I detested opera. A bunch of fat farts bellowing their lungs out. However, I have discovered that I actually like certain kinds of opera. There are a few pieces of music that actually move me, bring tears to my eyes (even though I try my hardest not to show it). Still, it is opera, and for me to tear, I must like it. Maybe 10 years ago I would never admit it. Even still, perhaps I still hate opera. However, my wife may find it somewhat pleasing and be hesitant to say so. Why should my dislike of opera (and my sub-sequent banning) deprive my wife of listening to it? Makes no sense.

My point is I never forbade them from playing any of the "crap" I would have considered banning in a heart-beat. I never banned. They just figured it out themselves.

Do not impose your tastes (likes or dislikes) on others. Let them judge for themselves. Just like you were left to judge on your own (I presume).

Life is a journey, and we all learn many things along the way. It's called evolving and becoming our own individuals. Not one person has the right to deprive us of this.

Just my personal thoughts in all of this.

Cheers :)

A rather serious response to an opinionated question. Your point is valid all the same. Personally, I was coming from a position of having no kids in the house and such, so I can ban anything I want. Had I had kids and such my approach would have been closer to yours for two reasons:
1) How else are the kids to learn what they like and don't like and get a taste for music all together. Allowing them to discover also opens up the door for introductions to the full spectrum of generes over time.
2) I recall my parents calling my music crap when I was a kid and not allowing it verbally and belly-aching eveytime they caught me playing it, so it's sauce for the goose from that standpoint.:)

There is something comical about Death Metal. I remember many years ago seeing a video of Venom and laughing my ass off. There is something very Spinal Tap-ish about it. I have a very angry brother who listens to that stuff. He's one of those people who always tries to sound smarter than everyone else and mispronounces alot of big words in the process. The only thing funnier than the music itself is listening to him pontificate about King Diamond.

Funny you should mention that topic. This fall at our state fair, a band called Five Finger Death Punch played outdoors and the singer came on and everyone around (including families w/children) could hear him yelling "f**k this place, f**k all this sh*t!!" along w/more incomprehensible tirades. Then came the distorted repetitive beat and single note banging with what sounded like a violent fit of vomiting over the mic. Disturbing but somewhat humorous. Still I had to get away and quickly.

A few days later I was discussing the event with a co-worker and we hatched a plan to make a Spinal Tap-like movie about Meth-Death-Speed-Metal and even came up with songs and characters. It was quite entertaining seeing my friend who can be quite comical put on his best angst grimace face and belt out rapidly a barely understandable low toned "THROW ACID ON YOUR DOG AND SODOMIZE YOUR GRANDMA"

I suppose everyone needs music at some point; even the neo-nazis, militia members, and meth lab workers.
