I am vehemently anti-Anti-Folk.
Folk music is way to important and ethnologically relevant to the human condition and shifting zeitgeist to be mocked.

I get stuck listening to "banging hip-hop and r&b" at work. Its one of those stations with about a 20 song loop. I have heard the same song 9-10 times in an 8 hour period, and thats only when I was halfway paying attention to it. The songs are played to death for 2-3 weeks, and then vanish. Its almost entirely autotune vocals too. JI also am not at all fond of the "white trash hillbilly" pop country stuff. It all seems to be about drinking and/or doing trashy stuff. I like Johnny Cash and Hank Sr, even Hank Jr, but I can't listen to Braid Paisley pontificate about "waaawdurrrr" or whatever her name is brag about being a redneck woman and shopping at Walmart.
Then again I occasionally bring in the ipod and drive people nuts at work. It will go from Frank Zappa to some bluegrass to Muddy Waters to Yes to Parliament to whatever else I've got loaded on there. My ipod has been described as "thats not random, thats psychotic".
Rap is verboten in my house. Managed to brainwash the kids that it's evil.
There's a whole lot of music I personally don't care for. There's a whole lot of music my son listens to that I personally don't care for. I can't imagine a "ban" on a style or genre of music at my house, or anywhere else.
Don't worry, I'll stay off y'alls lawns!
No matter how bad, I wouldn't outright ban a music genre in my house. I wouldn't consider myself a very good fan of music if I enforced a small group of genres and refused to acknowledge others, so I give everything a fair chance.
I root for any kid who rebels against a parent with draconian rules regarding music. It makes for a more intelligent and informed music listener if that youth can have unlimited access to music to be able to craft his or her palate.

There is something comical about Death Metal. I remember many years ago seeing a video of Venom and laughing my ass off. There is something very Spinal Tap-ish about it. I have a very angry brother who listens to that stuff. He's one of those people who always tries to sound smarter than everyone else and mispronounces alot of big words in the process. The only thing funnier than the music itself is listening to him pontificate about King Diamond.
Rap is just ****, period.
Opera I can take in small doses. I like Maria Callas.
Tool, of course.
I figured with all the hate and bile threads aimed at one or two specific bands, I'd lay it down for whole genres.
The following music (ha,ha!) is forever banned from my house:
1) Death metal: sounds like a variety of tortured animals gasping for breath backed by monotonous mechanical beats. The most amusical experience I have ever had was hearing this angry rubbish.
2) Opera: Screaming with style in languages I don't speak like italian. I don't care if they have multi octave ranges and articulation. It's still fancy bellerin'
3) Gangsta rap. Sorry, not interested in "bitches" and "Ho's", prison/gang records or other males sexual prowess and penis dimensions. There is such a thing as "over bling." Hey! That rhymed! I could e a rapper. Not.
Tool, of course.
I didn't like Opera until I studied it. A couple of years of operatic training, and I see it for what it is: the ultimate version of vocal music.
meh, don't worry about it. I nearly had people show up at my house with torches and pitchforks when I mentioned I didn't care for Joni Mitchell before. Good thing its raining now, or I might be concerned.
Some people hate it on evil/religious grounds and I respect that. I hate it kind of like a new form of unintelligible punk.
it's where your voice is the instrument for soloing :thmbsp: I can't say I enjoy most of Opera but i do have a handfull I do enjoy in my collection plus I have some I have never played that i picked up on the cheap both on vinyl and CD.
I have to LOL at people attaching my dislike of 3 genres to book burning fascism....
You'd think that I did something despicable to a family member when I said that I couldn't stand death metal. Some people hate it on evil/religious grounds and I respect that. I hate it kind of like a new form of unintelligible punk.
I will also reinforce that SLAYER is NOT death metal. Neither is slipknot, Pantera or dozens of other nu metal, prog metal, speed metal and thrash bands.
I will also corroborate that prog, thrash, speed metal and other types of metal are complex and daunting to play. What most people wouldn't give to play like Dime, Jordan Rudess or Dave Lombardo.
The underlying theme of this whole thread is tolerance. I find it that people who do not tolerate "X" band, cannot stand it if someone else does not tolerate their favorite band/music. Such a subjective thing that people try to make objective. TSK.
