Where it All Started for Me
I just found a Thorens TD~160 Turntable in the box at a GoodWill Store it seems to have a short in the wiring only plays out of the left channel :scratch2:

easy fix or a nightmare

Probably easy, worth the bother so get it if it's under a Franklin.

Oh, I got it and I got it for a little more then a Jackson :smoke:

It just seemed like a really sweet turntable to pass up at that price and in the og box :thmbsp:

Assuming that you haven't already done so, try giving the headshell a gentle wiggle to see if that makes any difference. Sometimes the pins extending from the headshell or the female sockets in the armwand get finicky from years of use/abuse. Cleaning with De-Oxit may or may not help.

Also try changing sides with the headshell wiring to the cartridge and see if the faulty channel changes to the left (or not).

If the problem is not in the headshell or cartridge, check the condition of the wires and solder joints on the junction plate where the tonearm wires and the leads on the RCA cable join together underneath the armboard.

Good luck,
Dave

pull and clean the headshell connections. Rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip works fine for this. I've had trouble with those on my own 160 and cleaning sorted it out.

All good advice here but before you turn it on and play it too much I would carefully remove the platter and make sure there is oil in the bearing well.

I bought a used TD 160B and there was nothing in the bearing except a light film.

Unless there is already an adequate amount of clean oil in the bearing I would recommend that you first clean the spindle bearing and pulley, replace the bearing oil with fresh, replace the belt, and oil the motor. The suspension probably needs an adjustment too. Check the Thorens page here on AK. Also, download the manuals from vinyl engine.

There is work involved with these tables but once properly set up they are awesome. Twenty-ish dollars is a steal :thmbsp:

This table can be tweaked to sound excellent; a good (quiet) motor and bearing are essential so check this out to prevent inducing a problem.

Cheers, Bob

Which 160?

If it is not the Super or a late model with the Super upgrades, go to theanalogdept and check out the TD-160 pages and get that table to the top of its performance capabilities and add new phono cables. For what you paid you can invest and still be way ahead.

Better show off some pics. A Goodwill 160 in original box is not your everyday find.

I know.... Lucky dog.

I'd grab something like that in a heartbeat, even if the tonearm had to be re-wired. I came really-close to buying one a few years ago. I'll probably get a Thorens at some point, but at least now I have more time to choose the right one.

I'm with Blue Shadow on this. I think of the TD 160's as everything you will ever need in a turntable with very little junk to get in the way. You got it for a song! Yes- take some time, check the lubrication, just replace the tonearm wires if it looks like more than a dirty contact. Check the ground wire. Do some research on maintenance for this and perform it and you can keep it forever. I am jealous!

 Wow! Always hoped to make a find like that. The closest I have come to that kinda of find is a friend who found a TD-180 at a thrift and did not want to fiddle with the head shell. so now I have it.

Great news had my Electronics Guy have a look and one of the wires in the headshell was loose....easy fix cost me nothing :thmbsp::music:

Thanks again for all the great advice everyone :thmbsp:

Can't beat a free, easy fix. Congrats on your score!

That is awesome. Gotta love the simplicity and fixability of the vintage Thorens.

The gist is that you level the plinth, then adjust the 3 suspension adjustments so that the platter is also level. The springs tend to sag somewhat with age and you'll often find its hanging low in the back corner.
