Tonearm for Denon DL-103

OK, the Denon DL-103 is a rather low compliance cartridge. It apparently requires a rather higher effective mass tonearm. What tonearms would compatible with this cartridge? Are there older AT tonearms, Micro Seiki or others? I'm not interested in what could be usable if we add mass to the headshell, like say a Jelco or an SME.
I've seen a Micro Seiki MA 77 II, but can find little about it. Just as an example.

So what higher mass tonearms can you suggest?

In and around 1970 the Denon DL-103 was first released, it had been on trial with NHK Japan for at lest two years prior.

The radio stations were mostly using Audio Technica and Denon heavy weight tone arms of that era.

The Micro Seiki tone arms may have been too rich for the many radio stations through out the country.

But the Micro Seiki MA 88 would be a nice candidate. :idea:
 
The DL103 is fantastic on a Victor UA-5045, and also a Fidelity Research FR-54. Each can be found at reasonable prices. Even better if the cartridge is placed in a nice closed wood Stanley Engineering body :)

A 10" Jelco could also be a decent match though I've never personally tried it. The Denon tonearms would also likely make a decent match despite them being a bit on the ugly side.
 
More mass = better.

I added a 3gr weight at the headshell and tacked a metal washer to the counterweight on the Jelco 750D I used to own, and it greatly improved the DL-103's focus and bass weight.

I guess it would work pretty well with my Fidelity Research FR-64S arm also. A bit pricey for a 103 though
 
On the budget end of things, the AT1005ii is in the right mass range and often goes for less than $300 in good condition. :)

I'm running one for my low-compliance carts at the moment. Sounds great. :)
 
The DL-103 dates back to 1962. It was designed for contemporary broadcasting industry requirements and as such, it is an effective mass hog. Matching tonearms start at around 16g eff. mass. The 103 begins to shine at about 19g and just never stops *wanting* more. A 15g eff. mass tonearm can make it sound OK'ish but really just hints at how it should be. It simply lacks the stamina (inertia) to tame the DL-103 because it is a very stiff (low compliance) cart. In my experience, not even the classic Thorens TP-16 Mk-I (16.5g eff. mass) has enough of it to make the 103 perform. Slap it on the decade older BTD-12S though, and it's a world of a difference.

Most broadcast tonearms of the 60's and the following consumer grade tonearms of the same class, are a natural match for a Denon DL-103. Those are all high eff. mass tonearms such as the Ortofons designed to handle the proprietary SPU's, the long broadcasting EMT's plus the older Japanese rivals. Now days most of those vintage tonearms are rare and expensive, so people tend to compromise for what's available and affordable. Whatever it is, the DL-103 reputation, the global affection it attracts with the die hard fan club, was not acquired by mounting it on a 15 gram eff. mass tonearm.

The cheapest and most common tonearm that I found to be a surprisingly good match for the DL-103 is the Lenco L-75 / Bogen B-75 / Goldring GL-75 that is estimated at 23 - 24 grams of EM (no one really knows). Unfortunately it's not much good for anything else. It is a rather low end design of a knife edge bearing tonearm with a poorly implemented tension wire counter weight stub coupling mechanism that's very difficult to fix. The rotten v-block mounts issue isn't a show stopper but it's a royal pain to rewire and I find it rather ungraceful. The one thing it does good when intact is play a DL-103 cart.

Another viable but a lesser common option is the Thorens BTD-12S tonearm. Some say it's an EMT inspired design by Thorens and there are two variants of this tonearm. One was supplied with the TD-135 turntable as an on-deck no-armboard version, with the lateral bearings embedded in the turntable chassis, separate from the tonearm. These are common and pop up on eBay every now and then - though not cheap. The other flavor was a stand alone full fledged tonearm with an armboard, lift bank, bearings housing and cable. I'm not sure about it's effective mass but I estimate it at above 19g. It's VTF exertion mechanism goes all the way up to 8 grams and there's no built in anti-skate mechanism (if that's much of an indication). Whether EMT inspired or not, it's one superb tonearm, designed for the lower compliant carts of the era. The successor to the BTD-12S was the TP-14 with the anti-skate weight on string and TP-50 headshell, which can play well with the DL-103 as well.

I'm currently using a BTD-12S on a TD-135 with a bog plain DL-103 cart - and it's near perfect. I'm also using a DL-103R on a TD-124 with an early SME 3012 Series 2 tonearm (stainless steel armtube, larger two parts counter weight). I did not have to modify it but I had to acquire the (missing) second part of the smaller rider weight as an additional lump of mass for my use with the DL-103R. It is a perfect match to my ears.

I've added the tonearms I mentioned already to a list of DL-103 compatible matches that I've compiled off the top of my head. It is nothing but a very partial
and incomplete collection:
  • SME 3012 Series 1 or early Series 2 (12")
  • Thorens BTD-12S / TP-14
  • Acos Lustre GST 1
  • Ortofon RS-212
  • Ortofon RMG-212 / RMG-309 (12")
  • Ortofon SMG-212 (9") / SKG-212 (12")
  • EMT 997 (banana)
  • EMT 929
  • Lenco/Bogen /Goldring L/B/GL-75 tonearm
 
Tnsilver left nothing out re the tonearms for the DL-103 as far as I can see. I tried a DL-103 on an Audio Technica ATP12T and the results were less than satisfying even with a heavier than stock headshell. No doubt matched to one of the tonearms Tnsilver mentioned the results might of been much better. For what you are saving on the cost of the DL-103 you are going to pay dearly for a tonearm to make it sound the way it should. Moving into the 1970s and 1980s Denon offered a number of MC cartridges for lighter tonearms that were superior to the DL-103, both 103 series and 300 series cartridges, to name a couple I have are the DL-103D and DL-303. My advice save your money and forget about the DL-103.
 
In contrast to @majick47 I thought my DL-103 sounded pretty nice using a Audio Technica ATP-12T tonearm that has an effective mass of around 21g. I did use a 12gr head shell versus the 9gr original AT headshell. The AT arm was commonly used in radio stations and given the 103 was designed for broadcast use it makes sense to me the two would match up well. Maybe @KentTeffeteller can provide some context on this combo's broadcast use. The OP isn't interested in using a Jelco tonearm but the 103 sounds good on my Jelco SA-750E using a 3gr weight added to the stock 12gr head shell and with the counterweight further out on the counterweight stem. Doing both increases the effective mass without much fuss. The DL-103 was my first MC cartridge and the start of a slippery slope!

Maybe what is being overlooked is the advancement in cartridge design/performance from the early-mid 1960s to cartridges mfg in the 1970s-80s that were a big step forward. For the 1960s the DL-103 was probably a great cartridge but as the years rolled by it was surpassed by a number of Denon and other brands of cartridges.

I think you are right that the DL-103 was a big step up when it was introduced in 1962(?) and its low compliance made it more durable in commercial environments. The 103 is a serviceable cartridge with the right tonearm and ability to load it at about 500 ohms. I keep mine handy when I know I will have guests around who want to play records but it isn't my choice for regular listening.

I like the Denon DL-103 on an ATP 12-T or ATP 16-T tonearm. Also, the DL-102 was superb on it also. But rarely used in USA broadcasting ever. MC was not practical for use outside of Classical, Jazz, and Easy Listening outlets, they were too delicate for most USA AM and FM work on air. The NHK in Japan had Studio engineers handling and cueing records, and announcers just announced. Likewise most European state and national radios did the same, they went away from this when program presenters (announcers) began handling and cueing their own records and tapes, and later on the computers on air.
