TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

Wonder if anyone already purchased something on Panlishop.com?
I came across this service/shop while was searching for the 'real blue' board - Cheng Zhi 2.0 version, and actually found out that is the international purchasing agent, or the international version of Taobao.com which is exclusively for the Chinese market, (Taobao shop was mentioned few pages back).
Anyhow, I have placed the order for a board and few other little components and will see how it will go. I like that they offer PayPal option as well, something Aliexpress doesn't, for example.

This 3116 fever actually has its 'official' version: Genuine Fever computer TPA3116D2 digital amplifier board
It needs just a free PCI slot :banana:

i'm working on my green board build. i stripped the dynaco ST120 i bought at the AK fest. now i'm looking at power supplies. i have a nice laptop brick (18.5 v; 3.5a) that should work fine.

i also scored a huge brick that turns out to be an X-box power supply. it is 12v, 16.5a. should also work, based on rhing's old posts on power supplies. i stripped the wires and there is a forest of little wires (see pic). any guesses re which wires i want to use, or do i have to experiment w/ my multimeter (need to do that anyways, i guess).

My granddaughters took it from me to run their tablet's music from. It won't get real loud but has a wonderful sound for background music.

I would like to hear what you think after you compare these two. I have an XR-57 running my Squeeze Box Touch thru the digital coax and have a hard time believing it can get any better than this. Look forward to your impressions.
 
Here's my first shot....I bought only 1 pair of banana plug receptors. So I somehow managed to connect the speaker cables. The PSU is from my 19v laptop charger. What's the cheapest PSU that can be had from that auction site for this? If you know it please PM me.

I like the sound. Yes it sure is SET-like. Not quite sure if it has that much of depth though. I'll have to keep listening to it.

Cool looking enclosure Davidro! Very nice.

I'm wondering what kind of results people have had with upgrading some of the components on these boards. After having spent some time with the B&B board, I definitely enjoy its detail and neutralness, but it can be somewhat shrill and edgy in the highs and lacks a level of fluidness. Depending on the recording, this can become somewhat fatiguing and in some cases almost unpleasant to listen to. I will use it in a secondary system without hesitation but I don't think it will find a place in my main system as it stands. I was hoping it would beat the poweramp stage of my HK3490 but on the whole I don't think it really does. I wonder if that's just the limitations of the TPA3116 chip or if upgrading some of the components would change that. I have some nonpolar Blackgates I could use as DC buffers and could maybe replace the decoupling and bootstrap caps. Has anyone tried and can indicate the amount of improvement that would bring?
 
Davidro, excellent! Do you have a tube preamp to try with your 3116?

59volvo, I have an XR55 but believe me, the 3116 is in another league.

My 300B has pre-out. So I can give it a go.
Do you know the cheapest PSU that can be had from that auction site for this?

I'm quite happy with the result. I might give a go at the mono-blocks.

you can get a variable voltage and dail it in on a sweet spot,that is what I use it is 12v - 24v @7A ,I use mine at 18volts that is were I get my warmest sound,but that is with the 2.1 board it might be different with the 2 mono blocks.
 
Ok I went ahead anyway. I'm not cut for DIY, as I'm impatient. I've been anxious to hear the sound again. I got the banana plug receptors too.

It should be fine to use, it will just limit the maximum amount of current the amp has at its disposal. As long as you don't turn the volume up too much it won't pose a problem. To be able to use its full 2x50w potential you need about 24V/6A.

Powersupply decoupling is changed here, gone are the 2 1nF's all other copied from TI, they added 1 10nF for decoupling. (same designer offers 3118 version were heatsink isn't blocking view)

What is probably biggest difference is they removed all parts after the LC outputfilter, the 1nF's to ground and the 10nF's plus resistor to ground. These are there on other designs to lead large peaks in high frequencies to ground, instead of speakers. Question when do these peaks occur, how often and :) do your speakers need this protection :D
