TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

New Sure outputfiltering looks different too. For classD there is traditional AD and newer TexasInstruments chips like 3110 use BD modulation. Output filters look different for AD/BD. BD outputfilters have same parts going to ground for 4 seperate outputs, you can divide number of parts by 4. AD outputfiltering has also parts between + and - outputs, number of parts not always dividable by 4. Looking at the number of capacitors and resistors in output (forget about 2 double diodes D13/D14) it looks like this new Sure has a AD outputfilter after the BD chip.

Hmmm.. so that board has AD filtering? Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. If so, Sure is doing something much different than what TI recommends.

The only speakers I have tried so far are Pioneer BS21 bookshelfs that I use in a nearfield computer set-up. 84 db efficiency 6 ohm. I use the same set-up for music listening while on my computer, and for testing all my boards and mods so I am quite sensitive to any SQ differences when making changes.

Thanks lacro for the update.

Can't imagine there's a fan under that hockey puck. The fan on my Sure TK2050 looks nothing like that.

Can't imagine why a fan would even be needed at 15W :), The 3110 can run without a heat sink It looks to me to be more of an attempt to emulate the appearance of some kind of transformer or something.

I know the frustration mate. I too want some no-nonsense TPA monos for my pre.

Well, as others have posted the power advantages of running the TPA3116 in mono PBTL is just an incremental improvement compared to just getting a stereo board and running with it, depending on speaker impedance. I also agree with you can't buy something off the self on the bay that just does it without any fiddling. It is odd, but then again we're talking about a DIY amp.

However, I suspect (but can't prove) that some of the latest JBL powered monitors are doing exactly what you say by using TPA3116 class D, one per channel and bi-amped across the low and high end drivers instead to get the most benefit out of this nice little amp. That's what I'd like to try next.

Cheers!

TI recommendation could just be about simplicity or cost? Sure designer might have more experience with designing other kind of filter? Different doesn't mean worse automatically. If there are parts between + and - they do seem more criticle, replacing 1 ceramic filtercapacitor for 1 Wima MKS did change Sure7498 distortion from 3% to 0.3% for Trevor Marshall.

C9R6 and C24R13 seem like outputfilter parts to me but maybe they are not, doing for signal to inner two inductors path what C7R7 and C20R12 do for signalpath outer two inductors. But it really isn't clear from picture :)

That's the thing. I want it to be low impedance friendly while I don't enjoy the DIY process really.

Okay, I'm only 28 pages through the thread, but I've already ordered a TPA3110 board and a 2 tube 6ns pre. Mostly based on hearing rogerfederer's setup and acquiring a pair of Tekton 4.5OB speakers to play with.
I hope I'm happy with the 3110 but if not, what the heck, I'll pick up a 3116. Not like it's gonna break the bank!

I had a pair of 4.5OB's as well. There's still a picture in my gallery. They need some low end help but the rest is excellent. The 3116/3110 would be a great match.

I took a few more photos so you guys may be able to see the board a little better. Let me know if you want more close-ups.

I have been listening to my new TPA3110 15W 8 ohm Sure amp for almost a week now, and all I can say is this board in it's stock form is really sweet sounding. Today I connected it with my XLS Encores that I built. Man... this sounds great, I am hearing things in music I haven't heard before:yes: and it drives these speakers with as much power as I could ever need.

I have 3 of the original 8W Sure TPA3110 boards, and 3 of the Blue TPA3116 boards that I have been having fun trying different mods which IMO are necessary to get good sound from them. They can be made to sound pretty awesome with mods.

However, this new Sure TPA3110 15w 8 ohm amp sounds great right out of the box, to my ears better than the others in their stock form. I think if anyone is considering a TPA3116 YJ board that they do not plan to mod, might be better served with this board which doesn't have the on/off pop!

I can't make comparisons with the other versions of the TPA3116 that many have said are better than the Blue YJ as I never tried one.

To my ears for less than $20 shipped, this is a WINNER! :music: YMMV...

I'd been on the fence, pulled the switch on this board today, it will be my third build. I will always take a clean signal over power. Will be interesting to compare to the 3116 boards. I still need my ALPS board to finish wiring in the pot as the solder pins defeated me...

I asked Sure why they decided to use the hockey puck. This is the answer I got. I guess they have a valid reason to use it.
Class A TPA3116? :) Btw, the retail price will only be $24.90 :)

Yes, the TPA3116 is indeed a high efficiency chip.
However our "2*50W" output is a actual value and the temperature test standard is:
Full power output continuously.
Considering the needs of full power output and chip service life, so we install this heatsink on the board.
In addition, the heatsink is customized. Don't you think the cylindrical design perfect match with this high quality, small (size:3.6"*2.7") but powerful audio amplifier board?
And only sells for $24.9 (retail price).

Puck sized passive heatsink would be oversized but maybe also more expensive? They want a visual difference. Maybe they even went a little bit further and created a difference on paper that might require a little more heatsinking: 600khz or higher switching frequency. Cost would be zero to do so and they would stand out.

For those needing PBTL: The Audiobah boards are quite easy to turn into PBTL mono boards by bridging a few solder points. I have the details if anyone wants them. Personally though I find the 2x50w from a single 3116 more than enough for my needs.
