Tuners?

Tuners and differences?

Well, I was just stopping by this thread to see what it was about, and saw that many people have many tuners and some have a tuner collection. I never gave the tuner component much thought, as long as I could get my station tuned in and had presets and the basic functions, but I must ask, what else does a tuner do? Do different tuners sound different like amps and speakers and such? I have the Rotel RT-1080. To me it seems to be a nice tuner, and even tells you the names of the groups and/or songs on different stations. Not sure how they do that!!! LOL

Tuners are just like amps and speakers and provide different sound. You might be interested in the http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/. About everything you would ever want to know about tuners. And the reviews and info on the individual tuners is excellent. They also have a Yahoo forum for discussions.

Two tuners here in my hi-fi system:

Sony XDR-F1HD (modified)
Onkyo T-4970

I also have a Sony ST-SA3ES (my first proper FM tuner) but it developed a dry joint in the front end a few years ago meaning I could never guarantee getting any FM reception. I have it boxed up somewhere.

I have a Yamaha CT-610II. It's only a three-gang tuner but it's performance is quite good. The sound quality is excellent and sensitivity seems above par. A good basic tuner with no useless frills.

Fisher FM-9025 (paid $20 for it at a pawn shop just to use until getting my MR78 back from being repaired. I miss my baby. :dammit:)

hey beans,

i haven't heard that fisher, but i have a half dozen or so tunas i paid $50 or less for; all sound so much better than even the mr74 & mr77 i owned, (refurb'd aligned mr77), which are acknowledged to sonically outperform the mr78. (admittedly, i got good deals on a couple, but they normally still sell for <$100.) not wanting to rain on your parade, but there literally dozens of tuna awailable for $200 or less, even if not shopping carefully, that will sound better than the mr78. you should check it out - excellent sounding fm is really amazing. :music:

My first post here.

Marantz 2238B as tuner, feeding Conrad Johnson PV-5 pre, to Parasound Halo A23 amp, Carver Amazing speakers. Love it for now :thmbsp:

2 Pioneer TX-950s, both have weak output. I have to turn the volume halfway up to get it reasonable loud (turner barely makes the spectrum analyzer on my EQ register), where with a "normal" source, 1/2 vol would have the whole house shakin and then some. Also each one had a few preset buttons that didn't work.

The solution? I bought a TX-540 off ebay for cheap. Works MUCH better, has same overall dimensions, and the green dial is sweet! It's the tuner in my avatar

Mark, welcome and you have good tastes in tuners. I have the black version of your Philips, a 6731 and it is a really nice unit. Do you have the matching amp and preamp?

Thanks Brian,

No, just the tuner.

At the time, it went with a Heathkit AP-1800 preamp (that I still have) and a Hafler DH-200 amp.

The tuner was something like #6 on the TIC tuner shootout. A few persons have the tuner that is well respected and sought after. I think at one time there were 3 or 4 of us with the 3 piece system. I'm not sure if I'm not the only person with all 3 pieces still. If you keep an eye out, the preamp and power amp can be had rather inexpensively considering the sound quality, power, features and original price. Having a nice 210 rms per channel of clean power and good sound is really nice.

Some shots of my Fisher FM-1000 that I am trying to sell on that auction site. It's tough to say good-bye to something that I've had so long, although I've rarely played.

It was fun shooting it though...

That's a real beauty. I hope it finds a good home....:thmbsp:

I don't listen to the radio that much, but here's what I have for stand-alone tuners:

KLH Model 18 (This is the one I use the most)
Marantz ST-300
Kenwood KT-5500
Knight FM tube tuner
Sony ST-JX521
