Tuners?

Recently, I purchased a Sony XDR-F1HD FM/AM Tuner to help out my Fisher 400 bring in WQXR, now at 105.9. At its new frequency, it has only about 10% of its previous transmitting power and the Fisher 400 had a great deal of difficulty grabbing the station. Even with a roof-mounted Yagi, it had problems, and although the Sony will not pull the station in HD, it will produce a listenable stereo transmission. For the money, it does a creditable job. On strong stations, such as WBGO, the Fisher produces a better, more dynamic sound, but the Sony will find stations the Fisher cannot and also offers AM and a clock.

Currently, my collection includes:

Fisher FM-1000 (tube)
Fisher TFM-300 (hybrid tube/solid state)
McIntosh MR67 (tube)
2 McIntosh MR65Bs (tube)
McIntosh MR7082 (solid state)
Pioneer TX-130 (solid state)
Pioneer TX-930 (solid state)
Pioneer TX-410 (solid state)

The one and only Sony ST 4950 that i pulled out of a trash pile after a flea market 13 years ago. It's never failed. Crystal clear and never drifts. And all lghts and meters as found still working. I think it will out live me. I'll take a knob any day of the week!

I am more a amplifier guy but here it goes:

Marantz 2130E (the best i have)
Marantz 2120 (allso a very nice one)
Marantz 115
Marantz ST-510
Marantz ST-520
Marantz ST-310

Just took a quick peek and there is no selectable voltage and states it is 120V. I don't have schematics of any kind, sorry.

Trhee,
I noticed in your signature you have a Sanyo Plus T-55. Is yours the US model or the international model with the selectable voltage in the back (120V, 220V)?

I ask because I recently picked up the International model with selectable voltage. One issue I'm trying to correct is the AM is set to the European standard of 9KHz rather than the US 10 KHz station spacing. From research I've determined that this is adjustable internally by removing certain diodes in the digital display section. My problem. I don't have the international version schematics. Bob at fmtunerinfo did scan the US schematics for me but they are slightly different than the international version. Would you by any chance have the international model service manual/schematics? If so I would be willing to pay to have a copy made or scanned. Thanks!

My favorite Tuner is my Technics SA-GX130 tuner because of the great sound.

I also own a:
Fisher 170,
Kenwood KR-4070
a Happauge WinTV-1800 with an FM tuner
and a 20th Anniversary Mac Prototype with a built in FM tuner.

This is the best sounding one of the lot.

Nice! :thmbsp: Get your CT-7000 gone through and updated by Ken ******** (or one of the other 'known-good' tuner techs) and it should be very close.

I've only got 1 Tuner, I had a lowerer end digital yamaha in the mid 80's that sounded pretty good.

My current tuner I purchased new 2 years ago, a Magnum Dynalab MD100T Hybred Analog FM unit with the silver wiring option and a remote. I don't understand how, but this FM tuner sound's better than 1/2 my CD colection when I hear the same song. I had no Idea FM radio could sound so good. Do any of you find this. My CDP and DAC module together sound great at their best with some CD's but overall the Tuner Trumpts them. I listen to that tuner 80% of the time while using the CDP during comercials. Most consider FM Radio to be inferior to other sorces, including MP3. They apparently haven't heard FM at it's best, or it's 2'nd best.

You're not alone. It's an interesting phenomenon, one I've noticed most recently (and not for the first time) with my Marantz ST6000 since installing a yagi and rotor on my roof a couple of days ago. What's puzzling is--as you note--the same program material sounding better delivered via FM than by your own source components. While that may reflect on the ability of the source component-interconnect cable chain to reproduce the source accurately, I've heard the same effect with too many source component combinations to accept that as a conclusive explanation.

I think some who consider FM inferior get hung up by the FM broadcast bandwith spec of 20Hz-15KHz, reasoning that the theoretically truncated top end will render what you hear necessarily inferior to what you hear from your own source equipment. While that's a valid consideration, I haven't found it to be a listening issue where a station pays attention to the overall broadcast quality of its product. Certainly there are FM stations that do harm to what they broadcast--dynamics compression comes immediately to mind--but that isn't true in all cases.

In any event, I'm enjoying some quality jazz and classical broadcasts in my area. Tomorrow I take delivery of a refurbished and realigned Mac MR77, and I'll be interested in hearing how what it outputs compares to my other source components.
