if your sherwood doesn't sound better than the mcintosh, it needs refurb/alignment, imo... it should also be at least as good at reception...Favorites - solid state - Sony ST-5000FW tube - McIntosh MR71 (although the recently departed Scott 310E had a bit better sound.)
Also have a Sherwood S-3000V tuber, Sony ST-J75, Sony ST-S730ES, and one of those little Sony HD tuners.
Got a new-to-me Yamaha T-2 in the shop getting an alignment, relamp, etc, for which I have high hopes. Picked it up for $135!

I just got the CT-1010![]()
We've had threads counting our speakers, telling about our turntables, yada yada.
So, now, how about your tuners? How many do you have?
And the Magnum Dynalab is beaten out by many other tuners. Among them the HH Scott Broadcast Monitors, McIntosh tuners, Marantz 20 and 20B, Fisher classics, Sequerras, and the REL Precedent.
Maybe! Those tuners are more expensive than than Most Magnum Dynalab's when adjusted for inflation. Any of Magnum Dynalab's Analog FM Tuners will run head to head with most anything out there dollar for dollar, including vintage units price adjusted for inflation. From their enty level $1,300 MD90 (which is almost a bargain for new FM Tuners) to their $7,500 MD108t their sound is in a word breathtaking, their Tubed units particulary so. If you don't believe me, check out the reviews on their products, and their website. Much of my purchase decisions are based on a company's philosphy, and Dynalab's is my first choice.
Make no mistake their are some Good vintage Tuners out their that I would be quiet happy with when operating at their prime, Some of the better Pioneers of the late 70's come to mind. But if you want new, their are very few choices for audiophile grade Analog FM Tuners, much less with that wonderful tube sound.
To Appreciate the SQ of their higher higher end unit's you need a very transparent system. Synergy is the key here. My Bryston B100sst Amp and Energy Pro 22 Montors just sing with my MD100T Tuner.
PS: Gota love that Fisher in the photo above!
i must respectfully agree to disagree re: the sq of md tuna for the price. based on my experience with an ft101a which i lived with for ~6 months (but did not own; it was a friend's). i'd have to rank it in the bottom 10% of my list of tuna i have owned. and based upon the comments of those whose ears i respect, that have had the opportunity to listen to the higher-end m-d offerings, i feel that you can do far better, for the price. even if you adjust for inflation, (tho it's not really relevant when deciding on what you wanna buy today.) inflation is not as relevant regarding electronics imo, because all electronics gear has had its prices drop significantly, compared to the rest of the marketplace. i remember the first scientific calculator a bud of mine got in high school back in 1972 - $500!!!. i didn't get one until i went to college - $100; still a lot in today's dollars, but it doesn't mean it's any better...
regarding the professional rewiews of m-d's product, i believe they are over-rated because they are rewiewed by folks typically w/o much experience in tuna. if i had the cash to drop ten large on on an md-109, you can be sure that an accuphase t-1100 would be in my collection, and a few grand extra in my bank account!

will one of these $1300-$1600 tunas stand up to the sonics of a refurb'd modded sansui tu-x1? i have a few tunas that will set you back ~$500-$1000 - after refurb and mods - that will... and a couple that will for <$500...I'm talking about today's units, not the older ones. The thing with Magnum Dynalab is they offer a full line of good tuners, you don't have to pluck down $10,000, you can get outstanding Tube units for $1,600 and SS unit's for $1,300. I don't think anybody offers this range today.
Your right about the inflation thing, what I should say is the their MD90 and better units run head to head with anthing in their price range. Today their are few Tuners in that range though.
I'd like to hear the Accuphase unit myself. Their Amps are apparently no sloutch either.

i agree - it is the music that is important; glad you are enjoying! :thmbsp:I've never heard the tu-x1 so I can't say. I don't compare one unit to anouther, I compare the sound to the insterment, or voice, or a proper soundstage. All I can say is that my MD100t de-lineates all of the above very well. tamborines and symbols sound like their right here in the room. the imaging, inner detail, bass it's all their, and dead quite. It's like listening to all the music I loved for the fist time. What can I say? It's RF section is just as good. I'm guessing the 90t would come very close.
No I don't work at Magnum Dynalab!! I just like their Tuners.
