Tuners?

FWIW......
I rarely even turn on the radio in my car due to the boring banal music that is played on most stations theses days ..

Other than a good classic rock FM that usually comes in clear in my area., most stations play the same crap....... things that are just a drone on one or two chords.. with absolutely no melody..... and the male "singers" all sound alike .
Personally., I hate rap but even some rap has more musical content than this crap. .

Millennials seem to like this sort of thing so, music stations evidently cater to them.
Radio now seems to be a wasteland of mostly millennial music...at least in my area.

Even stations that had good formats seems to have switched to millennial music.... presumably to sell more advertising to them.
Yes, I know that not all millennials like this crap but....explain that to the bean counters...

To make maters even worse, stations that once broadcast classical or jazz have gone out of business.
Will millennials be the first generations in general not to like classical and jazz and cause their demise ?

I just wish there was a jazz or classical station

Here is a list of stations around your area
https://www.radiolineup.com/locate/Middletown-NY

You may have better station choices with another tuner with better narrow band selectivity & sensitivity, point an outdoor antennae south.

yes i am aware of that list and site.
Fact is most are just all talk and very little music. What they say they feature is not always accurate and / or out of date.

Also, most have ambiguous formats like 'variety", "public", "adult", etc, etc. The stations that actually broadcast good music most of the time are few and far between .
.
Also, yes, most need a roof antennae to get a usable signal from most of those stations... in my location
l also presently live an an apartment complex.... on the ground floor...and I am limited to an indoor dipole of course

Keep in mind that I have a radio in my car with a proper antenna on its roof. So, I know what is in my area as I drive around it :)

I got the Kenwod KT 2001A today and there are indeed some major differences between the 2001 and 2001A
First of all, the 2001A sounds much better over all ..

*** With the 2001 the signal strength meter seemed to swing over to the extreme right right even for a weak signal... and even switches to stereo with a weak signal.
*** The 2001A signal meter is much more realistic. It also needs a good signal to auto switch to stereo......just as it should be
In any event, even mono sounds better on the 2001A
i am even able to get a few more FM stations with the 2001A that comes in clear even with a relatively weak signal..

AM is about the same but, it does seem to sound a bit better.

Anyway i even got got the original users manual with it that also includes the complete schemantics for it ....from a time when it was not a throw away society
The 2991A is indeed like new as the seller claimed. :)

What about the " NAD 4020A " Tuner ?
it has great specs and you can see on my my sig that I am a NAD fan.
I love their design philosophy (with their innovative audio designs, and cosmetic look) and great sound ..

Fact Is, I am beginning to see / hear the shortcomings in the Kenwood and now want something better
I can get the NAD tuner fairly cheaply

yeah, but many responded when i mentioned the Kenwwod tuner in this thread .
I should have listened to them when they said it was a bad tuner

I got the NAD with much better specs and there is indeed a big (better) difference . .:)

I just picked up an Onkyo T-9. It's pretty good and I think will get a lot better with a cleaning per the sticky in this part of the forum.
I also run a Fisher FM-100-B on my main system. It's the knees of the bees. Has a beautiful glow, classic look, and matches my X-100-B integrated amplifier.
In the office, I use a Parasound Ztuner, which is surprisingly good. It has a tiny form factor/footprint, too, which makes it easy to stick wherever there is space.

I use an AudioPrism antenna with the Fisher, although I'm not sure it really works any better than the dipole wire antenna I use on my repair bench or in my office. It looks impressive, though, which is very important since my dog and cat sometimes come into the music room. I want them to know that I only have the absolute best.

The rest of my "tuners" are in receivers, so they don't really count.

Hi everyone in AK Land. Very 1st post (I apologize if in wrong thread).
Any speaker recommendations pls. for a refurbished TEAC AG-D9100 amplifier (approx. 120 w/channel stereo; 8 ohm). Thanks!

Two T-80's and one T-500. One T-80 is being rebuilt and should have it back next week then I'll send out the other.

Denon TU-460 and the FM section of my Integra DTM 40.7 2-channel receiver.

Panelist Bob at FMtunerinfo.com is right; the Denon does sound very good. It beats the pants off the receiver FM section sonically. More fleshed-out, better highs and ultra-quiet with a strong signal. I only listen to one station, WSMR in Sarasota, which comes in very clear and strong with just an indoor antenna.

I'm a big tuner fan - I work in a home office, and I'm often too lazy to select playlists - so tuners have a use for me.
My current tuner (in most use) is my Carver TX-11b, which is a fine tuner (to my ears).
By secondary tuner is a Sony ST-3950SD, which is a bit disappointing, but it may just be antenna issues (my office is in the basement).
I also have a Sansui TU-217, which sounds just fine to me. Also have a Technics ST-9030, which is cool, but I'm using the Carver right now.
Also have a couple of Carver TX-11a tuners, but I haven't used them in quite a while.

Only one here...Rotel rt940ax and it's quite good. But I listen to a lot of fm so I'd like better, but a vintage silver face unit would look out of place in my system. Had a Mac mr77 some time back and it was quite good sounding but the looks didn't work. Magnum Dynalab's look nice but a bit pricey for me so my little Rotel is it for me for now. Oh yeh, as I'm thinking I had a Sansui TU717 with matching amp and it was very nice. Now I should have kept that kit for what I sold it for.

Hi,
I've not heard the rt940, but I had two rt2100's, an rt990 and presently have an rht10 in rotation. So, even though yours might be a little lower on the rotel food chain, I'd be surprised if an mr77 could come close to it sonically. I've owned and listened to ~100 tuners over the past 30 years, and I can think of only one that sounded as bad as the mr77 i owned. (refurb'd by a certified mcintosh tech.) And the mint mr74 i owned, considered by many to be mac's best sounding s/s tuner, was only marginally less worse. (The refurb'd extensively modded mr65b i owned *was* really nice sounding, but not competitive with sherwood tubed tuners at a fraction of the cost.)

The sansui tu717 is a very nice sounding tuna, imo, and one that supposedly gets near to "as good as it gets" after mods. (I've not heard one with mods, myself.) The 517 is essentially the same as the 717, and can sell for less, as some folks don't know that. I've had one of each, still have the 717. the m-d tuna, they're decent, but way overpriced for what you're getting, imo.

There's a slew of great performing tuna >$200, and even >$100, if you're patient.

doug s.,
i need to thin "the school..."
