Turntable (or something) has started tripping a relay (assumed) in my receiver when the needle drops

One last thing to try to further isolate. Just because you have connected the Sansui to a different power strip and wall outlet, if in the same room (living room as you state, which is I presume the room in which you have your system?) does not mean you have isolated the circuit. To do this, you will need to take your Sansui power cord (the one with extension cord attached) to a different room and plug it in there. Now, at your circuit breaker, turn off the breaker that your Pio system is plugged into. After turning it off (flipping the fuse switch in most cases) ensure that there is no power going to your Pio system but that the Sansui still has power. This way, should your other room, the one where you now have the extension cord plugged in, be on the same circuit it will not have power either so you need to find yet another one. This is just to complete the effort to try to determine if the circuit is somehow causing the issue, which I doubt but could be.....easy enough to do.
