just about any loudspeaker they make these days is positively FUGLY. PIONEER, of all companies, producing one of the fugliest,the S-1EX...
now see everyone? "Kabuki" speaks aren't all THAT bad. you know what they say, "you never appreiciate what you had until it's gone...
I think they are beautiful! $9000 per pair retail! Here is a CAD mock up of a cut-away:
Agreed -- verrry ugly speakers. Had a pair briefly, and they were just too ugly to own.
We have a pair of old Acousti-Phase speaker cabinets (that I rebuilt like 4-5 different times, at increasing levels of skill, over about a 20 year period) that we use for our anime convention, we actually have named "Ugly 1" and "Ugly 2".
All the vinyl woodgrain was peeling, so I ripped it all off. Corners were getting chipped and jagged... so I ground off all the corners and the edges with a belt sander. Wanted to make sure they didn't deteriorate more in our storage unit, so I slopped on some $1/can black spray paint... gloss black, complete with fish-eyes and runs. Just painted right over the left-over glue from the old woodgrain vinyl! Grilles were ugly brown fabric, that was discolored and probably pet-stained... I just sprayed the fabric flat black. The grille fasteners wouldn't hold the grilles on... so I just drove a drywall screw into each corner of the grille from the front, with a cordless drill, so that they wouldn't fall off.
One of them was dropped, and the cabinet actually split open at a seam... so I glued and screwed them back together with wood glue, caulk and more drywall screws. Sanded the heads on the screws with the belt sander, so they wouldn't catch on anything... no filler, just sprayed black paint over them. The ports have been changed, and at one point, there was a blank panel screwed-and-glued over the rear port, which was later ripped back off, and some black paint sprayed over the mess (glue residue, etc). Port is a piece of PVC pipe, held in by drywall screws driven in from the inside of the pipe, outside into the box wall. Terminals are PITA flat-head screw terminals, with an L-pad crammed into the small round recess for the terminals, with the terminals.
Try to top that.
Nonetheless, they still sound FANTASTIC. Nice Eminence-built 12" woofer (RMS-124, sold in the day by Audio Lab here in Atlanta), the midrange is the 4.5" can-back unit made for a Boston A150 (found them surplus a long time ago), and a Vifa D25AG35-06 aluminum-dome double-chamber tweeter, all with first-order crossovers and impedance compensation. Cabinet is heavily braced inside with heavy lining of fiberglass insulation on all internal walls. Port carefully tuned... bass goes down into the high-20-Hz-range, with POWER and CONTROL. As for use- they're the left and right front speakers in one of our larger video rooms... and run from a Marantz SR4400 home theater receiver. Some SERIOUS output, when they're up and running.
The ultimate "sleeper" speaker... sounds like multi-thousand bucks, looks like it was rejected from a trash pile...
Oh, BTW: the words "UGLY 1" and "UGLY 2" are spray painted onto the backs, graffiti-style, with a can of white spray paint...

Those look positively well-finished compared to the "Uglys" I described! I know, as I've also got speakers made that way, that sit right beside them in our storage unit!.

Those, so far, are the ugliest non homemade speakers I've seen in this thread.
The others you posted look either quite strange, or just inoffensive, though those Cabasse Artis speakers have that "eyeball" look going on.
