I would say that the weirdest vintage set I got, are the Bic Soundspans.... There pretty wild for a vintage speaker.
 
The "oddest" or hardest to come by speaker I have in reserve, would have to be my Domus Mirage... I think.


Other than something I build of course.

MEGATREND II by Transmission Audio

The new Megatrend II
- 24 high performance 8" aluminum cone wideband woofers
- 2 meter tall 1" wide ribbon system for the high frequencies
- sensitivity of 100dB at 1 Watt input, 5 meter on axis
- distortion: <0,3% at 120dB SPL (low freq.) and <0,03% high freq.

They use a 12" up firing woofer, up firing mid and down firing tweeter. Omni directional and were designed to be placed behind sofas and such. Anywhere really. Non directional so no imaging, but produce a huge soundstage.

Very smooth room filling sound and a pleasure to listen to. One of those speakers that you would put in a living room setting that wasn't dedicated to critical listening, but sit where you want music enjoyment.

I think/hope we all realize that for a speaker to be "Unique" and "Distinctive" (the subject of this thread), the designer will need to think "outside-the-box" (pun intended) :D I like the thought inspiring designs (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and I myself have posted many speakers in this thread that I like :yes:, and some that I do not :no:, but I realize others may not view them the way that I do. And, I have also enjoyed noticing and mentioning some of the quirky designs in my humorous notes in this thread. It's all good!

As an artist that often designs "stuff", you really just look at your surroundings for inspiration. A toilet may be based off a teacup or a car off a plane. In many instances while people may think, "you can't turn a pitcher plant or a saxophone into a speaker, that's crazy" the designer says why the hell not. Then the unsuspecting consumer is astounded at what they felt was an impossibility and label it as original.

Many good (or at least unusual) designs in this thread. :thmbsp:

I think the Ionovac plasma speakers are unique (except for a few later DIY imitators). With covers on, they don't look as bizarre as many of the eye-catching ones in this thread, but with covers off, they sure look different!

Those are the most amazing audio experience I have ever had. Along with 4 tube monoblocs powering them in a $180,000 system.

The harddrives sound like crap. There are youtube videos. But it does make sounds.

When the MBLs are all assembled, they have a large cage with mesh on it around them trimmed in shiny metal, etc.

They look like awesome to me, the radial design is astonishing to listen to. Up close to the carbon fiber tweeter and midrange, its like the sound comes from nowhere.

Any photos??? I looked on the website http://www.ionovac.com/ and found photos of their high frequency driver (cool concept), and also some floorstanders that look like they are designed to fit into corners (I presume these towers are the ones you refer to). The website images only show the towers with the covers on, and the scans are grainy. I would love to see a clean photo with the covers off (as you noted) if you got one.

When I first saw these on the internet, I thought that if I had these, I would consider strong lighting where they were located because these just cannot be placed in a dark corner. This company offers some other stunning wood finishes, as well as some other interesting and distinctive speakers :drool: I really like the wood sound defection pieces on top (too often this is plastic...I do not like plastic).
