Unique & Distinctive Speakers

LSA10 (DK F7-XDream) Speaker ... I LOVE METAL!!!

When LSA Group acquired DK Design Group in 2005, one prototype speaker cabinet was designated as DK’s top-end model, proposed to retail for $17,000. The 300 lb. cabinets were machined from aluminum, acoustically inert and radical in styling. LSA developed a sophisticated crossover network and exhaustively tested the unit, resulting in excellent sound performance.

Easily my favorite thread...I hope this goes on forever..wonderful examples of the integration of form and function, and just plain beautiful, abstract form..love it:thmbsp:
this one is pretty simple..an example of "more is better" i suppose, hehe:D

This one is my own design. It's actually been revised with a new base (pedestal/plinth style). Sorry for the pic fuzziness... it was a quick shot taken to send to a cabinet builder as part of trying to get quote bids...

I agree, of course, so I started this thread for the reasons you mentioned.:D As a closet designer, I appreciate the many ways creativity can be displayed in speakers. I have submitted many designs as I find them, but I imagine there must be so many more out there, so now we AKers have a thread we can share.

Gordon, cool design! You bring up a little known fact that I also discovered a while back, that it can be easier than some might think to design your own speaker and have a cabinet maker make it for you. I did the same when I needed a special size computer desk for a corner of my den. Nothing off-the-shelf would work well, so I modified an existing design to fit perfectly in my den, even custom specified the various laminates throughout the desk. And, to my amazement, I found the cabinet maker myself, and he was more than happy to quote me directly (so I did not have to pay a middle man to do nothing). I actually looked over the middleman's shoulders to see the cabinet makers name on their quote book, then I looked them up myself...sneaky eh? :D
 
Thanks, Yamahalic, for those links to the incredible Danley Labs Matterhorn project..astounding stuff..how fascinating that both you and Gordon are into prototyping speaker designs...I've been tempted to do same, using Autocad, bit i have been laboring under the impression that one off, specialized cabinet making would be cost prohibitive, given my predisposition for complex compound radii curves, etc..I'm encouraged by the work you two are sharing.
My fascination with this thread continues unabated...if only we could see the acoustic pipe dreams of some Formula One aerodynamicist come to life..now to lure one onto AK.....:scratch2::music:

I just built two subwoofers out of old 1950s cabs from a church and the ML D12Q2M5 12" sub driver, one in each cab, and they kick ass. I can hear absolute distinction between notes all the way down to 25hz.

I am not sure what would be the cost penalty for a more complex design, but the simple designs are easy for cab makers. I submitted my desk design via old school drafting, but I more recently designed a modular knife storage block (official accessory for type 301 Porsche-design steak knives) made of wood, and submitted the design using a simple CAD program, and the prototype was perfect as a result. You might want to design the speaker and get some quotes to make it (nothing to lose except your design work time, but I imagine you might get enough satisfaction from creating the design, even if it is never made). Heck, you could always frame and hang the design print on a wall (sounds like art to me :D). One difficult decision might be to keep the design purely aesthetic, or to incorporate proven speaker design parameters such as from Thiele/Small which would be a bit more involved (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiele/Small).

Anyway, I share your interest in seeing motorsports design in the audio realm :thmbsp:, and somewhere in this thread I posted an image of the Ferrari tower speakers that might fit your interest. The pic kfalls shared sort of brings to mind what Salvador Dali might create, had he been inclined to design playback equipment while being seduced by a beautiful woman lol...very tasty!:thmbsp::yes:
