I will be at the VFW this evening, eating a steak with a local few. I will probably cook their steaks for them.

Time marches on

Vietnam vet here, who just recently retired (not from the service but from work in general).

The last World war one vet just passed on this year.
Our Vets from world war II are hitting their 80s and 90s
Korean war vets in their 80s
Vietnam guys like me getting old and ornery

I can vividly remember as a kid in the early 50s seeing a couple of the remaining Civil war vets on tv.

No particular point to this post , except thanks to all the vets both war and peacetime.

Aftermath
(March 1919)

Have you forgotten yet? ...
For the world's events have rumbled on since those gagged days,
Like traffic checked while at the crossing of city-ways:
And the haunted gap in your mind has filled with thoughts that flow
Like clouds in the lit heaven of life; and you're a man reprieved to go,
Taking your peaceful share of Time, with joy to spare.
But the past is just the same - and War's a bloody game ...
Have you forgotten yet? ...
Look down, and swear by the slain of the War that you'll never forget.

Do you remember the dark months you held the sector at Mametz -
The nights you watched and wired and dug and piled sandbags on parapets?
Do you remember the rats; and the stench
of corpses rotting in front of the front-line trench -
And dawn coming, dirty-white, and chill with a hopeless rain?
Do you ever stop and ask, "Is it all going to happen again?"

Do you remember the hour of din before the attack -
And the anger, the blind compassion that seized and shook you
As you peered at the doomed and haggard faces of your men?
Do you remember the stretcher-cases lurching back
With dying eyes and lolling heads - those ashen-grey
Masks of the lads who once were keen and kind and gay?

Have you forgotten yet? ...
Look up, and swear by the green of the spring that you'll never forget.

To all my fellow vets hope you have a great day. Many places have free stuff today and the wife and I ( a vet herself) are going to go to Texas Roadhouse for lunch.

Not sure what it will be like since this will be the first time to partake. Got out copies of our DD214 so we are all set. :thmbsp:

Thanks to all my fellow USMC veterans and veterans of all the Armed Services today and every day. Stand tall and proud this day and grab that free grub.

I've got my DD214 and my old DD Form 2 (ID Card) ready for the grubbage at the variety of restaurants honoring Veterans with a free meal in appreciation for their service. :thmbsp:

A most respectful to salute to all my brother and sister veterans. Thank you for your service.

Here's to everyone who has paid the ultimate price from each and every nation on earth - as they were surely 'pressed' into the 'front-lines' by others!

Cheers, og/Dave :thmbsp:
