vintage sony speakers

It looks to be a mainstream version of their higher-end 70's or early 80's offerings, particularly the SS-Gx iterations. Likely nothing special, but perhaps worth a listen.

They look nice and clean, I'd second M on the chance for a listen. I just got my SSU-4000 today and I'm blown away by the quality. I never knew these exsisted and could sound so good.

Thanks, curiosity is making me think about picking them up, they do look to be in nice shape. Galaxie65 - i just saw your thread and they do look nice, good find.

I've never seen or heard anything about these, but I'd be vastly interested in seeing better photos, particularly internal photos. I've become a bit of a fan of Sony's many forgotten products, some of which are damned good.

My first reaction was "crap" but seeing the dome tweet makes me think you might want to check them out.

Sony, Sansui, Kenwood, Yamaha, all made rack systems which were less than what I would consider audiophile quality. I still have one of those Sansui rack systems with the sperate tuner, amp, eq, tt, cassette player, and speakers. They looked pretty neat like a cheaper version of a stack of quality sperates that they made but in truth they were not that good. They came with a rack cabinet with glass doors, and castors and a place to put records on the bottom. I was like 22 when I purchased mine, still have them, but they don't get any play time anymore. Not sure if these are speakers from one of those systems, I know the Kenwoods had 15 inch bass drivers, and my Sansui has 12 white paper bass drivers with fancy chrome around the mids and hi's with the little grills like the Yamaha NS-1000m's had. I thought they were pretty good when I first purchased them, but now I know better. In the days they cost around a grand for the whole set up. I know that they sold them at retail outlets not audiophile stores, and even those rental places would rent them to you with a rent to own like the Curtis Matthews TV stores. You still see them popping up in Pawn shops for sell every once in a while.

Well i ended up grabbing these. No pleasant suprises, Ken was probably right on this one. I do however find them to sound prety good and well ballanced. The cabinets are only 1.7 cubic ft and only weigh about 35 lbs a peice. I will post up some pics for saigo.
