Vintage speakers/modern speakers

vintage speakers are flat, modern ones are deep.

You lost me on that one :) because I've seen and heard Frank's Altecs and they're the size of a small commercial refrigerators. - and he drives them with a 3 watt amp.

Vintage speakers to me, any speaker with a 30 watt or less rating. Made before 1970. High db rating used with low wattage amps. Large in size to move more air. Efficient. Modern speakers, low efficiency power eaters. When the industry went solid state, high WPC went from the teens/twenty's to 50/100 or more WPC. You can drive anything with watts out the wazoo and make it sound good. Or can you? Seems like the trend is back to tubes, low WPC and efficient speakers. What is the old saying, if the first watt is bad, why do you need more?

That's been working for me. My listening area is only about 14x14, give or take, so there's just no need for a high-power setup. I've been having good luck with 39wpc into my Wharfedale W90's, although even that's a little more than I need (I'd like to get a 25wpc amp... Tube or early-solid-state... That would be perfect for my setup).

One of the things I love about my W90's is the look. You can't beat the look of a nice, well-cared-for, 50-year-old walnut veneer.

I'm kind of amazed that the general consensus seems to be that there are more similarities than dissimilarities between older and newer speakers. Now I don't know why this surprises me but it does. :scratch2:

Well maybe They are more similar than different because speaker designer's goals have always been about getting the most accurate sound reproduction possible . Just guessing here .

Computer modeling and simulation took off in the 90's , there is a distinct change in accuracy with speakers from the 90's than before . That aside a class -a speaker from any era will still sound good and proper today and they reflect the subjective taste of each era , there are exceptions of course , ESL's from the 50/60/70 still have a similar sonic signature today , just look at the revival of AMT's , very popular in the 70's and seemingly so today ...

If i had to pick one criteria which differentiates vintage speakers from modern , is baffle design and layout , very poor with vintage speakers ....

Zebra...I believe you're on to something. Sound reproduction of the times. Vintage as in The Big Band era etc., The band wasn't generally amped. The singer was. The idea was to replicate the sound of the band in your living room as if you were there live. Jump ahead to the Rock and Roll era and today. A wall of Marshall speakers and loud enough to damage your hearing. The industry stepped up to reproduce that sound as well. Now, the vintage speakers can cover that also, and I believe just as well...

Seems that the times have always dictated the design. I know when I was first shopping for decent speakers 70's there were many great options. Then the 80's came along and things went to hell at least for me, then we had the sub/sat craze of the 90's. It seems like things are settling back and we have at least in many respects returning to form.

Of course it could be said that I really cared in the late 70's when I spent a lot of time listening and was in the military overseas and had nice equipment available at a decent cost, then life took over for the next 20 years and I didn't pay attention. Now in my 50's I have the resources and maybe the time to return to the game at a higher level. Funny how my gear resembles my car, I had hotrods in my youth, then turned to utility, now I drive a muscle car again.

most newer stuff is plastic boxes that are just rectangles with corners. so new dont aleays mean better box or baffle design either. this will always be a debate thats for sure, i dont think one is any better then the other they both have their crap designs. vintage is likes so well cause you can get something better for less money since none of us want to go get a pair of walmart, bestbuy type speaers for several hundered bucks. yes if we had several thousand dollars or more then maybe we can find some new stuff that could be decent, so we can just get a vintage set and fix them up and have a speaker that would be like $1500 bucks in the 70's could be like $4-5 k nowadays and sound like it. bass can be just as detailed and deep as new i dont care what you say.

yes i am walk through best buy and look at how simliar the speakers are and how much plastic is used.

i know this they arnt the higher end speakers but still i would alwys go vintage ovcer that crap, even the klicpsch you get from there arnt that good. i walked in took at look their stuff and found seen most were plastic at least ours in champaign is like that.

not but its a place to get newer speakers just showing new isnt always better then vintage. it just looks like gernerally newer stuff in the general consumer range is crap. there seems to be less quality speakers being sold, then people think well maybe this bose company really got something over my bestbuy stuff and turns to them thinking they are getting more then they got. i dont know we dont really have a high end shop here as alot of places dont anymore i think thats one reson maybe why people go vintage more then new also. instead of driving long distances to get to a hifi shop its easier to get a great vintage set of ebay that might need some fixing for cheap.

the only higher end shop i been to was in champaign ill called glen poors audio, they didnt really have much i did see a giant pair of speakers with horns that were huge. the showroom i sat in had the ohm walsh totl speakrs and they were kinda cool but didnt inpress me over my epicure 3.0's. i ddint have time to hear the maggies or anything

My local BB has a Magnolia and they have some decent stuff in there, just not a lot of it.

The folks looking for speakers in a standard BB are the ones that gave their vintage speakers to GW in the first place.

Nice Epicures, BTW, makes me long for my old A100's I bought when I was 16! Loved them!

thanks bayoutiger i get that alot since they are a rare specimen. even today you dont see many like it. it seems they went all out on the design.

You have to stop thinking Best Buy caters to anyone who takes music reproduction seriously. They are no different than any Walmart in this regard. Don't try to equate what these box stores sell to quality audio gear. You should know that being a member of an audio forum. You need to educate yourself, audio wise, before making such broad and ludicrous statements.

its nothing diffrent then people, saing vintage isnt as good as new i was just showing an expample of how that wasnt true. like was said ealier go by your ear when it comes to the hobby dont go by age. youll be happier buying what sounds good to you then worry about the age or brand of equipment. this hobby is all about opinions everyone gonna hear the same pair of speakers diffrently no matter the cost.

One difference is the Mesothelioma class action won't accept your case if you own modern speakers.

They're more interested in owners of vintage speakers containing fiberglass dampening.
