walsh tweeter design/rebuild

You're welcome. Just know that a refurbished pair of Walsh drivers will set you back about $350, more than the speakers are worth. I suggest browsing your local Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for vintage speakers, then come back here to research what you've found.

Or, if you don't want to mess with the possibility of buying an old speaker that needs refurbishment and just want care-free great sound, just buy a new set. There has never been a better time to be a cheap audiophile. There are lots of great new speakers out there for less than $500. Some good ones for less than $300.

I love vintage Infinities, but refurbing them isn't always the best option.
 
I'm not an Engineer but +/- 4 db, that's a total of 8 DB. Does anybody have a response curve on an original set of Monitor 2A's? ? Every 3db is half power?
 
I assume you're referencing the frequency range, which Infinity spec'd as +/- 4db. But that doesn't "add" up to 8 db. That just means that the speaker plays the frequencies listed within a 4db limit. So for instance, the frequency range is listed as 22-28k hz, so Infinity says it will reach down to 22 hz, but it will up to 4db less at that frequency.

Yea, That's why I was hoping someone had a response curve for the buggers.....at 22hz it may be -4db but at 36hz it might be say +.5. Only way to really know is a response curve. The midrange and tweeter have a volume control in effect, which gives an adjustment for from 450hz to 5K and then 5k to 10k. The Walsh driver is virtually unprotected which, If I get my hands on a set I will protect with a jbl light bulb. My goal is to eventually replace all the aftermarket drivers with the originals, cheap. That said I probably won't get there but I can measure the outputs and compare them to a response curve if I have one. Most of the originals had opened and the foam surrounds had rotted by the early 1990's. I threw em away and put Pyles in it. I will admit that was a mistake, at least with the walsh"ezs".
 
Hello. I'd like to know how the cone material feels like. Is it hard, thick, thin, flexible? What "DIY" material could be used to build a DIY clone? I'm asking this because I've received 2 large and heavy dome tweeters with blown VCs, and they look perfect to try a DIY walsh tweeter experiment. I repair speakers professionally, so dealing with replacement VCs, centering domes and so is daily stuff for me, no problem with that.
 
The thickness felt like about 2 or three pieces of typing paper. They dent very easily and the dents cannot be effectively removed.

Is it a metal sheet? Metallized paper? Some other kind of film?
 
The guy that built them on his kitchen table was here about 10 years ago. I believe he said it was like a thick aluminum foil on a thin sheet of mylar plastic A thin layer of lubricant between the two and sealed on the edges with 5 minute epoxy. The assumption on my part is that the foil could vibrate free of the mylar or visa versa. Said he made the originals on his kitchen table. the center rod was about 4 inches of half inch hollow aluminum rod epoxied to the magnet, originally wooden dowel, after removing the soft dome. the base of the cone was aprox. 1 inch and the top roughly 3 1/2. In the thread on the 2nd page i believe, he gave exact dimensions. I can't hear 28,000 cycles per second. I only hear about 10 or 11, so I basically want a set of the pristine tweeters as Eye Candy. The walsh tweeters are the "purchase trigger" in these speakers, not that I intend to sell them. I just put a set of 25 dollar mids in from Parts Express last night, I am evaluating them now, These speaker builders were building a commercial product. They wanted to produce a product you would pay the highest dollar for, that they could manufacture as cheaply as possible. Bose, Infinity, Advent they all had their gimmicks, and they did sound good. Klipsch May be the exception to this "cheap" theory. I lust after a set of "Belles" although I don't have the room or the money for them,... yes and with Mac tube Monoblocks. I have never heard this arrangement, Would love to hear "Zigeunerweisen", with about 3 fingers of good cognac under my belt. Peer Gynt Suite, Moonlight Sonata, Three Gymnopedies, Clair de Lune, and Sarah Brightman singing "Classics". I view her as Judge Roy Bean did Lilly Langtree.

I have tried a hundred different materials and tried everything to recreate the cone foil imprint.
Never found an exact imprint but get close.
Made a few nice cones, found gold foil sheets on amazon that work.
 
What do you use for a form? What drivers do you use if you don't have the originals? I saw some funnels in Lowes that look close. The foam from Parts Express for speaker grills look about perfect for the foam.Jimbo, you got me thinking and that ain't good...
 
I have read that, and grolocks although credible, misses the mark in a few strong areas as far as what infinity did for production.
This is the poly film for under the foil.
Just found the gold foil that has close pattern.
Here's some of my odds and ends, stuff I work with.
I keep one working original for matching the sound on the rebuilds I think I have 2 with replacement vc and domes that are perfect.

I have some "mylar" sheets laying around. I think I could definitely try this. I'll post picts of the magnets I've got. Very large and heavy, I guess 1" Voice Coil.

What about the 2 layers and oil in between, mentioned at post #188 ?

I can get aluminum and copper foils down here, a bit thick (not the kitchen thin aluminum foil)

Do you have some thickness measurements of the materials you have tried?
EDITED: I see thickness and other details are already posted on DIY Audio and here some years ago. I'll read all the already available data before asking again for help.

BTW, now I remember I have free access to aluminum "offset printing plates". They look sturdy. Thin, perfectly flat, flexible, resistant, and a nice glossy finish on one side.... I think that could be a material to do some tries...
 
The original foil is not super heavy. There is no grease between the foil and plastic. What they did at the kitchen table is not the same as what was put into production.
Still can't find one of the tweeters that they used in production or who made them.

I have 2 on the shelf that are rebuilt with eBay aluminum 1" domes and vc, would love to find an original some to work with. The China crap has to be sorted through 20 domes to find 5 perfectly aligned.
I've had great results with the silk too but looks wise they don't match.
