Well, in that case, if you would've been uncomfortable handling the transaction in that fashion, why did you agree to it in the first place? Besides, couldn't you have brought a buddy or two along- preferably big ones? At any rate, please don't just leave someone hanging anymore. It's just plain ignorant.

Well, kind of shitty that you flaked. But his response suggests maybe your gut was right.

I don't think either party is in the right. Life goes on, though, right?

It seems your instincts were right about this nutbag. Screw him. You're entitled to change your mind because you made no contractual commitment. If he doesn't like it, he should find somewhere else to peddle his crap.

My advice is do nothing. Just walk away. It's entirely possible the man is violent and it would be wise not test that possibility by getting him booted off eBay. By all means print that document, and make a copy and give it to someone you can trust. That's what I'd do. I doubt you'll have anything to worry about.

F! that guy and anyone else who thinks you are less of a man for not being scammed.

I don't think poorly of anyone for following their instinct as concerns doing the deal. I think poorly of someone who says "I will be there at X o'clock" and doesn't even plan to show, and doesn't tell me because he doesn't want a 'confrontation'. It's fine not to do a deal. It's not fine to be a flake.

I agree that the OP should have called to cancel. But I think some of you are being kind of harsh on him, what with all this "man up" BS. What if the OP were a woman? She should still have called to cancel. Gender based insults are wholly inappropriate. Pretty much always, IMO.

OK, person up. Doesn't have the same kind of ring to it, but to each his, her, or transgendered own.

+1, time is money to most people.

Something tells me that even if you were to let this guy know you changed your mind, he would still give you $#!+. His email was overly aggressive and hinted to a very violent psychopath. He shouldn't be a seller if he doesn't know how to handle a finicky customer. Flake, hell. Better to have this guy pissed than to lose your shirt on the deal.

Is he going to "do what he does" to the international bidder who won but can't get it because he's not shipping internationally?

Oh, and forward that email to eBay (and maybe the local police).
Probably a young punk playing internet tough guy.
Shake him up a bit.

Sounds like he told the seller not to wait for him:

oh I told him not to come back early when he said that, I had even offered to come up the following day, he went ahead and did that on his own.

So yes, the OP may have been remiss in not telling the seller that he didn't want to buy, but it sounds like the seller was being really pushy in the first place and then went full douchebag. I'd print the mail and maybe even pass it along to law enforcement - a threat is a threat and is against the law.

Yeah I understand that, I wouldnt have just not shown up either, I would have called to tell the guy I wouldnt make it.

however , we are supposed to be a civilized society and threatening someone because we are angry is not OK. Period. no matter what the OP did or didnt do that type of behavior should not happen. what if someone sent you a message like that because they didnt like one of your post? would that be ok? NO , it wouldnt be.

I would report him to ebay and the police, you cant be too careful these days, a lot of stupid people are doing a lot of stupid sh!t lately.

I didn't see any threat in the email...

Now let's review: in 30 minutes I can know everything about your ass. In 3 hours I can be on your doorstep. Don't respond with some glib, self extricating account of how your commitment to travel to my home was somehow tainted by your ****ing paranoia. Do yourself a favor and forget you ever talked to me, cause if I start my research and do what I do for a living, you will not enjoy the outcome.

thats a threat

I just think of it as common decency. If I say I'm going to do something and other people make plans based on that, I do my best to do what I said I'd do. In the case of a purchase and I decided that I didn't feel comfortable with it, then fine. Call or email and say "I've changed my mind, and I'm not going to buy your widget." Problem solved.

Whether or not OP flaked doesn't matter to me one bit.

This seller is obviously taking this way too seriously. His conduct is remiss, inappropriate, uncivilized, boarder-line illegal even, and he either needs to get a talking to from the police or he needs to go see a doctor about his erectile dysfunction.

I mean seriously. It wasn't all that long ago that I was a child and I thought what really set adults apart from children was maturity and civility.

Clearly I was horrendously incorrect.

Well, I agree, and if you read my first response, I said that. What the guy did was unacceptable and probably illegal. I completely agree with you.

Reading skills are just going to hell in this country. It's killing me.

I agree until the seller sent out his violent rant, which invalidates any claims by him for common decency. It's ok to be pissed; that can be conveyed without the thinly-veiled threat. I would avoid this seller from here on if I were the OP.

If the guy was really intent on going after our friend, would the guy be giving him a heads up? He also said "forget we ever spoke..." which seems to indicate he wishes to move on.

BS! if someone is pressuring me to put down a deposit and just acting strange in general then he doesn't deserve a courtesy email.
