Its not clear to me if the OP ever agreed to the (unofficial) second chance offer. Am i missing something?

The deposit thing was probably just high pressure salesmanship to help establish how committed the OP was. Not necessarily "strange" per se but had the effect of spooking the OP.

Ha, either that or a guarantee that the buyer would go through. But the seller should have done a second chance offer, to make it an official transaction. And the buyer should have let the seller know he was backing out rather than letting him dangle and waste his time.

Regardless of 1st or 2nd chance offers or whatever transpired before, the OP & seller evidently had an agreement in principle in which the OP had an appointment with seller to consummate transaction and pickup his amp. On the appointed day, the OP never showed nor called the seller to advise of his change of heart.

That doesn't justify the seller acting like **** on the shoes of the dregs of humanity.

in case you do not know emailing a deposit to an email address through paypal not actually directly related to a completed ebay sale means the seller can not show to complete the deal and you will not get your money back, very dangerous to do, like paypaling someone money for a CL item, a CL seller CAN just not send anything to you.......

I agree until the seller sent out his violent rant, which invalidates any claims by him for common decency. It's ok to be pissed; that can be conveyed without the thinly-veiled threat. I would avoid this seller from here on if I were the OP.

The rant came after the OP blew off the meeting he had agreed to. The rant was wrong; the events leading up to the rant were wrong also.

The OP said he had a meeting with the buyer and decided that he was not going to go. He also didn't want to tell the seller that he wasn't going to go because he didn't want to be confrontational as he put it. So yeah, he did agree, then he didn't go, and the seller responded with a bunch of angry (and most likely illegal) threats. Seller was wrong. Buyer was a jerk. Nobody here was wearing a halo.

I do know that and eBay goes to lengths to warn you NOT to accept any offers outside of eBay, which is basically what this was. Why would you do that if there was no formal, official, eBay Second Chance Offer, which is the proper way to handle this situation?

That's why I said the seller should have made one, or you should have told him to make one and then mail the deposit, which happens a lot in the eBay Motors section when folks buy vehicles.

Agreed.

You need to go back and read everything else I posted beginning with #3 or #4.

Gotcha. I think you might be giving the seller too much credit but that's just me.

The day I sweat the small stuff like this will be the day I don't belong on this planet anymore.

+1. Simple, easy, effective. "I changed my mind, and I won't be coming over to your house at the agreed-upon time." End of problem. The seller definitely should have done the second chance thing, and the seller's rant was inappropriate and wrong also.

Wait a minute.

The seller ultimately agreed to hold the amp for you without securing a deposit. Am I missing something?

Wow...
Why just not caulk it up to lack of communication on both sides and let it go......:boring:
Seems like a awful waste of time IMHO just to see "who is right", or perhaps who is more in the right, etc etc etc....

Now let's review: in 30 minutes I can know everything about your ass. In 3 hours I can be on your doorstep. Don't respond with some glib, self extricating account of how your commitment to travel to my home was somehow tainted by your ****ing paranoia. Do yourself a favor and forget you ever talked to me, cause if I start my research and do what I do for a living, you will not enjoy the outcome.

thats a threat

A threat of what? Research? Visitation?

Are you the seller?

Ha, no. The message is threatening, I guess, but the specific threats are gathering knowledge and travel. It certainly isn't a threat of any harm, or anything illegal. Then again, I'm not a lawyer...

Is anyone here saying that if someone said this to them, "Do yourself a favor and forget you ever talked to me, cause if I start my research and do what I do for a living, you will not enjoy the outcome.", that they wouldn't even remotely consider it threatening? In this day and age and with what just happened in Colorado, that is a very naive way of thinking. "...do what I do for a living..." What is that, murder for hire, demolition, what? You can't tell me that the seller wasn't trying to be menacing.

Sure he was trying to be menacing. I'm just saying that what he wrote is quite different than saying:
"I am going to come to your house and kill you!"
THAT is a specific threat of harm.
